What does my dream mean?

I had a really weird dream a few years ago: I entered into a house that some woman gave me because she died, the house was big and amazing, it was like a small castle. There were books and one of them was the key to an elevator that took me to a big garden full of flowers and birds and cats. The dream was beautiful.

A year later I had the same dream but this time it was a little bit different: the house was now old and dirty, the books were dusty and the elevator rusty, the garden was dirty and the flowers dead. The cats ate all the birds and they looked hungry and skinny, they tried to attack me but I quickly closed the elevator. It really was terrible.

Do you know what it means?

  • These people aren't being very helpful are they? Dreams are our subconscious' way of interpereting thoughts and feelings we don't notice while we're awake. True, there isn't some mysterious, supernatural meaning to different dreams, but to dream of certain things may indicate certain worries, thoughts, feelings or fears. For example, I am a very sentimental person. I value those close to me and I believe family and loved ones are the most important thing a person can have, and I am always afraid of losing those close to me. I've also always, for as long as I can remember, dreamed of having really loose teeth, or teeth that are falling out. In my dream I'm always in a panic about the loose tooth/teeth and I'm always worrying what I'm going to do without it. One time I even had a dream that I lost all my teeth and had to see a speech therapist to teach me how to talk without teeth. Later on I aqquired a dream dictionary, that allows me to look up what I've dreamed of and see its meaning. I noticed that dreaming of teeth related to being afraid of losing somebody you value in life, such as a friend, family member or partner. I was pretty shocked and impressed to see that my dream related to something I knew was constantly on my mind.

Whilst it's true that dreams can sometimes reflect the mood of the dreamer, as well as their fears, desires and memories, those dream dictionaries are bullshit.

There's no hidden, universal symbolism within dreams that someone can define in a book.

Losing teeth in a dream doesn't inherently express a fear of "losing somebody you value". You read the dream definition, and think "yes that's true, I am afraid of losing somebody!" And assume it therefore must be true - when all the writer has done is attach a perfectly normal, common worry to a feature of a dream. They haven't done so after extensive research and interviews, they've just made it up so that those gullible enough to fall for it will literally buy into their ideas.

Same principle as horoscopes, fortune telling and cold reading.

That's my opinion, anyway. The person in the best position to interpret your dreams is you, not someone who has never met you and scribbled some abstract rubbish in a book to get some cash.

If you want to know what it means so bad, check a dream dictionary.

I personally think it means nothing. It's just a weird dream. We all get those from time to time.

Means you should've fed the cats.

There are dream dictionaries online. You'll find them more useful for the long run in case you're curious about more dreams.

It means you let your mind go...your dreams, inspiration, imagination, childlike sensibilities... Where'd it all go, man?

If you really want to understand your dreams, only you can analyze them, because they refer to things only you know or have experienced. There are thousands of books out there on the subject, so wander down to a library or go online and download a book or two. Simple, huh?
