What does mlk day mean to you?

What does Martin Luther King Day mean to you?

Nothing at all. 39
A free day off work/school. 17
A day to honor a great man. Not a vacation. 15
50/50....free day off AND a day to honor MLK. 27
A day to rile up blacks (or whites) with racist hate speech. 6
I HATE MLK Day. It shouldn't be a holiday. 7

    Totally off topic but...
I once saw a Boondocks episode where MLK was... I dunno, brought back to life in some manner in the 21st century and he was SO highly miffed by African American pop culture and the acceptable behaviors of African Americans in 21st century society that he... well he basically told them all they they suck and he moved to Canada. He just moved to Canada.

    That was hilarious.

It means the bank and post office are closed.

    But really...

I normally have to work on MLK day. I honestly don't really do anything special on that day, but I think he was a great man. He deserves to be honored and respected. Maybe this year I will stop and reflect on him a bit. It has never been explained to me what we are supposed to do on MLK day. ???

I live in America and I will be frank: It means absolutely nothing to me. AND I don't even get the day off of work!

The point of the holiday is to remember Martin Luther King Jr. I'm sure most people don't give a damn here in America and to be perfectly honest, I doubt many African Americans even give a damn lmao.

I worked for a non profit that made MLK day a volunteer day. Take the day off work but go work for the community. I tried to do this with my current employer but we aren't organized enough. It isn't one of our normal holidays but the boss agreed we can take it off if we do a volunteer project somewhere as a company....it's good PR.

So for me, it is a day to give back to the community in honor of a great man.

For me, it's a day to celebrate the steps we have taken towards equality for all in this country.

However, I refuse to call this holiday by its given name. MLK may have gotten good results, but I do not like the man himself. He was no doctor, and I refuse to call him such (his entire thesis was plagiarized).

I didn't know that day. When is it?

Very little. Although I'd like to live in a world where its seen as anachronistic and no longer celebrated.

Why? Honestly I am suprised to hear you say that.

I was being a bit tricky in my answer in that I wanted to make about four points but didn't want to write an essay. I'm actually really chuffed that I got most of it into two short sentences. The one point I didn't make was about the greatness of Martin Luther King but I thought that was a common opinion and I didn't need to waste my time agreeing with what everybody already knows. My points were all about, well, pretty much the entire rest of the world. Everyone except Dr. King.

I guess it was either poor wording or my poor understanding of what you meant by it.

I think it was mostly me not being expansive and I'm pretty sure I did that deliberately, although I'm not sure why any more. It seems a bit pointless. I should have just clearly said what I meant. Count it as a "wanker" moment. Whatever my motives were, I don't think they were good ones.

Either way, what I meant was that first off it doesn't mean as much to me because it's not my country or my culture. In the same way most people around the world wouldn't celebrate Emily Davidson (actually may not even know who she is, whereas at least word has been spread about Dr. King). Or that Europeans may not know as much about Aung San Suu Kyi, or Asians themselves may not know much about Tarenorerer of the Tomeginee.

The second point, and the one I felt most strongly about, was that a day is needed (and it is needed, I agree). I just wish I didn't live now, when it's still needed, but in the future when it would be seen as anachronistic because colour of skin isn't even a passing thought (because it doesn't need to be).

But in 2013, it still is. I wonder how many days of the year on IIN will yield not a single post or reply that includes the word "racism" or "racist". The word is there because the problem is there. When we no longer use those words, I'd hope it's because we no longer need to. It cannot come soon enough for me.

And for anyone blaming me for writing long posts on IIN in the future, direct your complaints to Parrish.

            All. His. Fault. :P

              You wanker :)

I understood the part about not doing much, because it is not your culture. That is perfectly fine with me.

The part about not needing it didn't make sense until you just expalined it. Now I can see how that statement could have gone either way.

Just wanted to make sure what you meant is all, so I didn't have to come and burn down that church you live in. (I hope the irony of that last part isn't lost on anyone.... If it is it is a joke because whites used to burn down black churches during that time in history...) Okay. I think you all get it.

    Meaningless tripe promoted by infiltrators.

Martin Luther King was a person who had a vision to correct injustices of the past.

Whoever posted this has no vision and seeks only to divide.

In my own defence, I was not arbitrarily calling people infiltrators. These persons had shown behaviours which exemplified a planned infiltration in order to discredit others.
It is an old, dirty tactic well known to me.
You can let them know, that should they 'decide' to continue in this behaviour, I will put more 'pi' in their face.
Remember, 'pi' is an infinite number.
