What does it mean when?

I was at the grocery store and in front of me, there's this guy who is in his twenties. The cashier looked to be in his 50s. I heard the cashier say to the guy, "I just have to say, you are one good looking guy" and then after he packed his bags and the twenty something picked them up/was ready to leave, the cashier said, "I know I'm not your Father but I just have to say, you are really quite an attractive young man, seriously, have a great day"

So for those of who weren't there, yeah the guy was attractive. I wouldn't say he was drop dead gorgeous but probably a 8/10. But the part that confused me the most was when the guy said "I know I'm not your Father"

What do you think that meant? It has me all stumped and curious!

He probably meant it to sound less creepy 8
He probably felt like he was being too much of a dad 4
It was just random 1

Agreed. Maybe he reminded the cashier of his son? (if he had one)

  • I've had similar scenarios happen to me. First time it happened I was confused but then after a few times it happened I just felt complimented.

I've had older guys say things like "You're an extremely good looking lad, how do you not have a girlfriend?" and so on.

Oh, there was this one guy in a club who was Russian. He was cool. Got me a round. Anyway, he told me that I should get to the dance floor because I could get anyone. He kept on saying "I'm not gay but you are a really good looking guy!"
We ended up talking about him being a father and so on until his wife and daughter came in because they had plans.

So, personally, I think it's normal for decent/good looking guys to have experienced an older guy compliment them. I've had it for quite a while that I am sure some of the other guys on here have experienced it too. It's just a compliment, don't mean they're gay and flirting with you. :)

The cashier's playing father issue games to see if he could wind up at his back door.

You really should mind your own business and not be listening to conversations obviously not meant for you. Then you wouldn't have to wonder what they meant, would you?

OP could be the guy saying this from a third person view. We would never know. I know it's an anonymous site but even I have done that many times.

  • He could of possibly thought it made him sound less creepy. Who knows. Has this affected you so much that you had to come to the website just to find out what it meant. Why didn't you just ask the cashier if you were so curious.

    • I was curious because it sounded strange to me.
