What do you think of the book of revelations? does luke 17:20 void it?

I've been raised as Christian and have been losing my faith in it with each passing day. One thing that bothers me is the Christian's I am surrounded by claim that Revelations is being fulfilled. I know each of these people have not read the whole bible or all of revelations, but it seems to me that Luke 17:20-21 voids that whole book:

"And when he was demanded of the Pharisees, when the kingdom of God should come, he answered them and said, The kingdom of God cometh not with observation:
Neither shall they say, Lo here! or, lo there! for, behold, the kingdom of God is within you."

Doesn't that seem to null Revelations to anybody else? Maybe even make a stronger argument for humanism? Please contribute any thoughts

  • I love the Book of Revelation, it's my favorite part of the Bible. I like it because it's so surreal and trippy.

It's tough because Revelation is probably THE hardest book for even a Biblical scholar to understand. There's actually a few schools of thought on interpreting Revelation. One believes Revelation has already occured (sometime around 70 AD), one believes some of it has occured and some still will, another believes it is all imagery and not at all literal, and there's the literal interpreters, along with one or two more schools of thought.

Being that Revelation is so hard for even a scholar to understand, I wouldn't put too much stock in what 99.9% of people have to say about it. People take the easier points and exploit them (which is true for much of the bible, relly-people like to pick and choose what to obey or believe and when it applies).

I can't really answer your question because in order to answer it you'd have to learn about the different schools of interpretation for Revelation and also study closely the book you are quoting and put the quote in context, it's quite difficult. You'd also need to study a lot of history and even ancient Jewish tradition and writings.

You might want to try to talk to someone who has studied the bible extensively and doesn't seem to have (too much of) an agenda regarding why they believe what they believe.

Maybe get out of the influence of the church. PEOPLE spoil religion. It can be a beautiful and peaceful thing but people tend to really ruin it. There's almost always an agenda or fear mongering, and just plain ignorance which is very disheartening.

It's Revelation, not Revelations. Sorry, but that really annoys me.

This wat i think:when He said the kingdom of God He was refering to "accepting God through Jesus in your heart, the Holy Trinity lives in you and God being King your life is now His kingdom,u r governed by Him". Luke does not void Revelation because if you keep reading it says 'as t was in the days of Noah so shall it be in the days of the Son of man, they did eat, drank married, until the day Noah entad the ark & the flood came and destroyed them all" which is basically wat revelation talks about, that is the Son of man will call the saints out from the world which is partaking in merriment,n bring them into the new Jerusalem, the doors of which will be shut to all others who will be destroyed in the lake of fire

What denomination are you? And I'm curious as to how they explain revelation and what they say it means. Do they have any interpretations?

I'm an atheist (not a fundamentalist dickhead) I understand what you mean when you say losing faith every passing day. I used to be a Christian but then I realized it was all a bunch of ancient shenanigans

Revelation is the only book I can read through without getting really bored. Imagining birds coming down in droves and eating people alive always sparks my imagination.

Anyways, I'd take that verse with a grain of salt, it probably makes more sense when in context of the verses around it. If you try to take every verse in the Bible too literally, you'll find all kinds of paradoxes like that.
