What do you think of people who commit suicide?

There's something I've noticed about people's attitudes towards those who commit suicide.
It's always something like: "that person had a mental illness (ex. depression) and should have gotten help sooner. Of course counseling and medication would have helped. He/she forgot that problems in life are only temporary and that there is always hope." And so on.

Isn't this attitude extremely condescending? Does someone really have to be mentally ill and completely irrational to commit suicide? Or can suicide ever simply be seen as a decision that should be respected as that person's decision and right?

(I know that some people think that suicide is always wrong because it hurts friends/family or because it's considered a sin in their religion -- I don't agree with this viewpoint, but I think it's a bit unrelated to my central question.)

It is extremely selfish of the friends/family who say that the person should not commit suicide because it will make them sad for a little while. I believe ending ones life on earth is a humans own choice, and nobody has any right to stop you.

Yes! This is true, people say they are selfish for ending their life, I think the people preventing them are the real selfish ones

I think it's incredibly brave. It's so hard to do.

I plan to commit suicide. In my case I believe it's rational, I'm a reclusive NEET with no professional or personal life and I don't see the point in continuing my existence. Preferably I'd like to have my entire existence erased from the world, but since that isn't possible suicide is the next best thing. I realize I could find something to live for (maybe) but I don't want to. I don't want to be saved. I want to die. Oh and in regard to family I don't see much meaning in it, why should I continue living a life I don't want and that brings me discomfort just to make others feel better.

I used to be so young and naive, but I inevitably came to a fork in the road. If I go to the right I could receive a great education, a job that was stable, pretty much the American Dream... ignorance. If I go left I could take the red pill which would expose me to the truth, lies, deceit, and all wickedness the world has to offer.

I chose the RED PILL and slowly I feel my life cracking under the pressure. I have no regrets at all, I only wish others would understand, but then again I've never told them so they probably don't know.

A disconnect with "reality" is starting to take place. It's like I'm watching the world on an antique TV set in no way involved with the characters on the screen.

I'm spirirual, but not religious. I feel like I'm devolving at this present time so I'm gonna quit while I'm ahead.

It all depends on the situation, but I would say that everyone deserves the right to decide their fate...

I consider most people who have commited suicide to be strong of character. Stronger than myself, at least.

It can be a logical decision, I think it just rarely is. I think suicide is wrong, but there are exceptions.

I'm against one notion that is always said about suicide victims, which is "you will never understand the pain/sadness they felt". Like the rest of us have never felt sad before or been in pain, and once you get to a certain level of darkness nothing can stop you. Know what? Maybe the rest of us thought about it first, or had more support, or simply had someone knock at the door.

While I respect someone's right to kill themselves, I don't think the act itself should be respected. There's nothing you can do after the fact, but suicide hotlines and psychologists exist for a reason.

If I knew someone I know was going to kill themselves, I would try everything within my power to stop them in most cases.

The circumstances under which I would consider suicide to be an option are not those which average people in first world countries in this day and age will realistically face. For example, as a tortured-daily POW, before being killed for a crime you did not commit or for any other unjust reason, if in the final stages of a terminal illness....

Suicide is brought on by a lack of human connection. When someone is very sick, homeless, mentally ill, etc. they struggle harder than the rest of us to establish a connection. It is indeed the responsibility of friends and family to ask the simple question "How are you feeling today?.. No, really- How are you feeling?" "How can I let you know that you're not just my friend, but I'm yours as well?" When you're void of attachment, those problems aren't temporary and they don't just go away upon human contact; you have to -feel- like someone actually loves you. If that's selfish then we are all guilty, selfish pricks.

There are to many people on this planet anyway. More polluted air and oceans for the rest of us.

Everytime I've ever felt suicidal in the past the last thing I'd ever think of is family and or so called friends. Family is what brought me to a state of madness in the first place, and friends, well, friends come and go.

Selfish, their pain is gone but their family will have to live with the 'what if's' for the rest of theirs.
