What do you think of people pulling godwins law?

Godwins law says that the longer a debate go the more likely something or someone is going to be compared to nazis and hitler. Now a lot of times people will do this at greatly inappropriate times. Such as "Hitler had a mustache. You have one too. Therefore you must be a nazi". Which really can be played on anything but often is played as an extreme to either scare off the debater or discredit a person. Such as "You are a nazi and so everything you say is worthless" or "You are a nazi so my point is now more creditable than yours".

Its very annoying and would never use it 7

      Unless you do actually have the moustache and are keen on genocide, then I'd say it's a pretty good point

        I do think there is some point where this is a valid point such as if someone says "I want to kill off all the non-white people and clear the filth of this world by making this an only white country" since that would be a very NeoNazi view.

        However like the example "Hitler had a mustache and you have one that means you are Hitler" which I have had used against me out of no where.

        "Oh you believe in following the law. Hitler was strict and believed in following law. You must be a Nazi too. You would have been one of those people who killed the Jews and blindly followed Hitlers orders. No matter how awful they were since you believe in following the law".

        Which saying you don't believe in following law means you believe in stuff like rape, killing, and stealing. So you really cant fight that because if you say you agree with following laws you are Hitler and if you don't agree you are a criminal. All because they had to toss in the Hitler card.

    I think if the argument has dragged on for way too long, someone who is sick to death of it can bust of Godwin's law just as a way of saying "fuck this....I'm done with this stupid argument".
    Done like that, it's just a way of ending it or of making the whole thing seem farcical.

    But saying it early in the debate or for no good reason would be pretty annoying.

    I think it's a pretty well recognised meme, so when people use it, it doesn't discredit anybody (maybe the person using it), but it just turns the whole argument into a joke.

    The name of the law doesn't match up to what the law even means. Like at all. How about NaziWin law or something, GodWin doesn't have anything to do with what you described. But anyways. I have never encountered a serious argument where anyone compared me to a nazi. It seems like a poor tactic to use.

      Yes but when spectators are stupid it just damages the reputation of whoever it was pulled on. Poor tactics wins when the spectators are morons.

          When you have one manipulative asshole leading an army of sheep you should realize what that means. King of the idiots is a lot of time the king of the palace and unless you are able to convince the audience different you have to fall to the stupid king. There is power in numbers no matter how unintelligent the army that is lead.
