its all in how you draw it. It can be tasteful, pornographic or both. Its all good to me.

Honestly, 90% of the nude art I see features women, even though 50%+ are painted by women. I'm a straight guy but I don't see my category of human represented visually in the art world, which makes me think it's a symptom of female objectification in society and media, the justification or philosophic concept usually arising AFTER the aesthetic conception.

I think it falls down to each of us to decide what it is to us. Too many artists delude themselves into thinking their subconscious sexuality or desire to pander to a popular audience doesn't factor into their work.

I don't think that is true. Women are more beautiful to some, but it obviously depends on the person.

It doesn't sound like you're looking at art it sounds like you're looking at playboys. 90%? Did you somehow forget the world's most famous nude, the David? When most people think of nude art they think of David, a man. In fact most nudes in the Classical age were men. They created the ideal man. Most were depictions of athletes or gods. The influences form the classical age had a strong impact on Michelangelo and have a strong impact today. Women took over later in the world of nude subjects. Women have aesthetics, the S curve in their back. I'm a straight woman and I can say I enjoy drawing women more. The shapes are more fluid.

Artists also have a history of getting rejected from galleries due to the nudity or even having their artwork altered. So no they're not whoring themselves out to appeal to a horny demographic.

I was focusing on the modern age, and not just those pieces of art with frames in galleries. All art. Art in media, television, the internet, painted art, sculpted art, photography. Art of my generation, everyday art.

"Women have aesthetics"? You like drawing what you think is pretty. That's normal. I have no contention with those who draw pretty things because they are pretty. It's when they deny drawing pretty things because they like drawing pretty things, and instead justify their drawing pretty things with whatever sociological statement they can convince people with. I've done art all my life and been around art students all my life, this is my experience. As to artists being rejected for nudity, not so much, not now anyway. Sex sells, and that is absolutely true of the art world. Further, shock value goes a long way - just look at Jake and Dinos Chapman.

I'm sorry to be so straightforward, but it disgusts me that some people don't even see the artistic quality in it.

Art is not porn. Porn is not art. I can't look at a nude picture and think porn--it's impossible for me... unless it really /is/ porn. Sounds lame, but I can tell instantaneously if it's porn or art. One guy painted a vagina. Yeah. That's porn.

as an artist (yes that is what i got my degree in) we focus on nudes to learn proper body proportions.
The Greeks idolized male nudity, The medieval Church scorned it and modern americans laugh at it.

  • It depends on the person who looks at the art. I dislike nude art. Perverts will find it sexy, others might find in artisticly beautiful, and another group will feel weird. Women are much easier to draw (I'm straight & 75% of my anime are women). Their curvy and they have more of an hourglass shape. Porn is much different from art, although many people would care to disagree.

I think it's beautiful. Also, when I say nude art I think of pieces like The Birth of Venus, not weird, slightly vulgar nude photography

To me, the nude human form is a beautiful thing. I love being nude whenever possible as well.

In the endeavor to find the equal amount of nude male art to compare with all the nude female art you will find out there, Disthing brings up a good point in that the artful justification is used in it's presentation only AFTER the "artist" may have "had their fun."

Douglas Simonsn is an artist that comes to mind that illustrates the point. He photographs and paints male nudes in Hawaii, ironically, he's gay.

People make too big of a deal over naked bodies. Wtf is the big deal ? Like why do we even wear clothes? Why are certain parts of the body considered inappropriate and why do we need to cover them? It's all just so stupid.

  • 1000yrVampireKing

I wouldn't be in it. I would probobly not ever draw it but I understand that the human body is a piece of art. People are actually amazingly difficult to draw. It might possibly be that we have skin unlike animals.

I don't judge between art and porn, because I've seen some vulgar art and artistic porn. That said, nudes are usually a study... unless the artist thinks they're going to get laid by drawing the model naked.

If the pose looks like it belongs in a porn movie, it's porn. If it looks like it belongs in an art museum, it's art. It's only pornographic if you choose to make it that way.

there's nothing wrong with nude art. not every naked body HAS to be about sex.

that being said there's nothing wrong with porn either. as long as the people involved are of age and willing.

    Both are good. :-)

I don't see anything sexual about it and i don't see anything artsy about it. It's not sexual because were born naked and during earlier times people didn't wear that many clothes just robes and whatnot.

It's not art because now were used to wearing clothes, so when taking clothes off a person it makes people think it's unique but it's not. A sculpture of a person with clothes is art. A sculpture of a person without clothes is the same thing, art, not nude-art, not risque not anything else.

It's a HUGE difference. A difference that should be obvious to people upon first sight. If people can't tell art from porn, there's probably something wrong with their moral compass.

It doesn't matter if it's "tasteful" on your standards or if you think it's pornographic, it's about the artist's intentions. Truly, there's more to nudity that showing sexuality. Nudity means vulnerability, but it's so natural. Nudity can present do many paradoxes and connotations and that's why it's so prominent in art. Nude drawing classes are so you can learn how to truly draw the human body as it is, without an embellishment.

Okay, I'm an artist, and it is beautiful. As an artist we break things down and build form on top. We need to understand skeletons, muscles, skin. Creating a nude gives you the best understanding of human form. We need to understand human form! Nude models come in all shapes, genders, and ages.

Something can be beautiful without being sexy.

Another thing is we do see the human form as beautiful. All of the shapes the muscles make on the bones. If you studied the human body you'd also find it lovely.
