What do you think of made-up baby names?

What do you thinks of names like Addaleigh and Tammilynn, or Benggamin and Ellyet? All of those names are names that have actually been used, by the way.

They are just trying to be Uniquwa. It gets a bit silly sometimes though.

I guess all names have been made up at some point. But I think it's nice to know your name means something and is not just a nice sound.

What I really don't understand are the names that sound exaxtly like a classic name but are spelled differently. That's just punishing your kid who will now have to spell out his name for the rest of his life.

Actually, most "common" names have roots in ancient occupations. Not technically made-up. But yes, I agree with you on the spelling thing.

Well, I guess it's not really any of my my business what people name their babies, but still, I don't understand what's wrong with common names like Robert, or Jeffrey (Considering they are English.)

I have two nieces named Za'miya, and Za'niya (I guess that's how you spell them.) But yet my nephews are named Michael and Marcus. Odd.

Why can't somebody call their child something unique, without people presuming it means they are 'looking down' on common names or thinking they are worth less? I think it's nice when people are willing to be creative with names. An individual name for an individual person, nothing wrong with that.

Robert is German by the way :P

I'll admit, I didn't know Robert was German.

Also, I wasn't trying to imply that people looked down on normal names, I was just saying what was on my mind.
I dunno, I was tired when I wrote that.

That's alright, I was just commenting on the "I don't understand what's wrong with common names" part of your answer, I wasn't having a go at you :)

Someone thumbed me down anyway so I guess my opinion is in the minority, or somehow offensive to someone.

Okay. I didn't thumbs you down though, just in case you were wondering. I didn't really see how your previous comment was offensive.

Ha I guessed it wasn't you anyway. Some people get a little thumb-happy I guess :)

I think we should be more open to new names. Most of us are so detached from the origin of our names anyway, at least in Western Europe and North America. Why should I have a name which can be traced back to Ancient Hebrew? I'm not religious. The meaning isn't important, it's all about the sound. So why can't a nice sounding, meaningless word, become a name? A unique, bespoke name for someone.

In some cultures it's perfectly acceptable to create new names. Why are we so snobbish about the idea?

I agree. I would never give one to my own child, but I won't judge a parent who decides to. We seem to have ourselves a society where anyone who does something too "different" is judged as being purposefully anti-conformist and an attention-seeker. Hmm.

A lot are terrible. I knew a Jeweliana. It's suppose to be Juliana but spelled differently.

I have a rare name- I have looke for other people having the same on the net and I've found none. WHen I was a little girl I was really ashame of the name because none of my little friends could pronounce it. But as I grew I came to love it. I think Addaleigh is a nice name.

Some are nice while others are just terrible and I wonder what possessed them to do this.

My granddad spelled my mum's name wrong on her birth certificate. Not a deliberate quirky spelling - he just fucked up :P So now she's just stuck with quite a strange spelling.

Out of your examples, the only one I disliked was "Addaleigh". Sounds ridiculous. The others aren't so bad. The boy names are actual names, they just have different spellings.

Addaleigh or Ellyet sounds pretty okay to me.
