What do you think of bee?

First off, let me explain alittle about BEE and its backround. BEE stands for Black Employment Empowerment. I live in South Africa, and we have white people, black people, a few indians and even less asians. We're nicknamed the rainbow nation. Anyway, as some of you might know, we had a law in this country a couple decades ago, called Apartheid. It was basically a law ensuring whites had their place, and blacks had their place. As far as I know (I'm only 19 so Apartheid was abolished around the time I was born) blacks were emplyed by whites on farms, the men as handy men or crop workers, the women as housekeepers and the children went to school. The families stayed on the farms with the whites and were given meals, clothes and warm beds. I'm sure some bad things happened during Apartheid, but I've personally heard a few elderly black folk say the country was more organised back in those years. Anyway, a new rule that came along with the abolishment of Apartheid was BEE. It is a law in this country, that every single company must have atleast 80% black employees. Its not a general guideline, its a hard rule. If the BEE people come around to your company and you don't have atleast 80% black workers, they shut you down unless you employ 80% blacks. What does everyone think of this? Is this how a country should be run? This isn't the only completely abserd law we have in this country, but its one of the most ridiculous ones I think. A persons skin colour doesn't determine how qualified they are for a specific job. What's everyones opinions?

I don't know much about it. I've tried researching it but I don't really know where to go to get an unbiased source (if such a thing even exists), so I don't really think anything about it other than it is an imperfect response to a difficult problem.

After all those years of white domination it's a mere consolation. If the black africans were given the same opportunities as the whites all companies would have at least 85% blacks, that BEE would not have been necessary.

I have South Africans friend and I think that one need to live there to understand. A post on this site will not help anyone understand the situation. Said that way that law seems indeed ridiculous but one cannot really understand without first understanding the country's story.

Has anyone here heard of the Soweto Uprising? Apartheid is abolished but the damages it has caused are not healed yet.

I have some libertarian views. I think that this is all rather silly. It sounds like the BEE are the politically correct police. Businesses should have the right to hire whomever they want to hire without the government breathing down their necks. These are private companies. It would be another matter if they were government jobs, but they aren't.

It sounds just like every other overreaction to what was by those seeking a new status quo.
I can't see it as having any benefit to a country's economy, as those who don't or can't run a business under those rules will just leave the country. That means job losses for all, because if you employ just 50% black, you are still employing people who need work.
Nope, just like "affirmative action" I think it is a system to placate a group, but does much more harm than good, generally speaking.
