What do you think of artists that create fan art?

I know people can be real hard asses when it comes to fanart. I used to be one of them. But a teacher of mine told me to loosen up and make a painting of Courage the Cowardly dog (my fav cartoon as a kid) I did loosen up and it was fun.

I understand I can't use it in a portfolio. I still make original art but I do a lot of fan art now. I make more art now so my skills are improving.

    Creating fan art is not bad... and not new either.

    If you study art history you will find that MOST of the classic artists actually got practice from creating their own versions of other artwork.

    FCs and OCs ftw. I hate how people think it's doesn't take talent. I'm like bitch, let's see you write something. I just hate it when they take a screen shot and just change the hair via ms paint

    It has an appreciative audience so supply - demand, but I'm not amongst that audience.

    DeviantArt is a fuckfest of fan art, and most of it is awful.

    "It's ok, when it's good." The people that just draw fanart, sometimes they're pageview whores. On Deviantart, fanart gets way, way, way more attention than it deserves, even if the art is crappy. So, if your fanart is nicely rendered, then I think it's a good thing. Also, fanart is something you shouldn't exclusively focus on.

    It's not that artists are being unoriginal, but rather, they are displaying their talents or their own style or perception of the original.

    I love good fanart and original work just the same.

    Personally I think it's not that great. Sure, it can display talent, but the majority of it lacks originality.

      But if each person has their own individual style, I'd say that's pretty fucking original to me.

      I like fanart. I honestly don't see what the big problem is.

      Obviously fanart done in MS paint by 9 year olds is bound to be shitty, but I admire fanart I see.

      Plus nothing is REALLY original anymore - most things done have already been repeated a few times in the past.

      That said nobody has any real talent anymore. Bring me DaVinci and Michaelangelo and now THAT, is real art.
