people often use 'normal' though they rarely specify what they mean. especially i suppose many people on this website can relate.

I think normal does not relatively exist. It is only relevant to the individual who is normal.
everyone has their own opinions about what's normal and what's not, really...
You can't really explain normal. That's one of the things that makes this site so interesting.
Normal = what's socially acceptable
(what doesn't get you tossed in a jail cell)
Normal is like an incrowd. Its what everybody in that particular society does. Like here on the west coast ever body says cool or like all the time. Over in the Massachusetts area and around there says oh thats wicked or that's beastly
"Normal" is just a word that people use to describe themselves, while not admitting to the things they do that are considered "abnormal." If everyone was open and honest about the things they do, think about and desire, then nothing would be considered abnormal.
The way I see normal is like a division of opinions.
What one person may think is completely normal may be what someone else sees as scandalous or even twisted.
For example, your stereotypical cliques.
The athletic cliques think sports are normal and enjoyable where as the intelligent "nerdy" cliques see sports as dangerous and unnecessary.
If that makes sense?
Or people who are religious, they believe that praying and having faith in the lord is a normal thing where as people who aren't religious might see it as something obsurd.
In reality, nothing is normal nor abnormal.
It just depends on where you are or who you're with that share the same opinions of what normality is.
All I can say is what is normal out there these days.Because there is so much madness out there.
Being eccentirc isn't unnormal, having a pyschological disorder isn't normal. That's what I think.

The concept of what is normal or abnormal seems to be based on societal standards. The subjective experience is completely different; what a person experiences can run parallel to what society expects of them or not. Just because a person is either normal or abnormal by the standards of society, that doesn't make their subjective experience any more or less legitimate. If you're an outlier, if you're not quite normal, there's nothing wrong with that. Nor is there anything wrong with being normal. Everyone is a victim of their own circumstances, at least to some degree.
Normality is different for everyone.
Normal is an adjective.
Abnormal is an adjective.
From what I've seen of this site there is loads of behaviors that are actually VERY normal but we just don't realize that until we come to a place like this and see just how normal it is. It doesn't seem to make all of them socially acceptable though.
the society kind of decides what normal is. its kinda sad though because something might not be accepted by society and it wouldn't be considered "normal" when it is to you.
Normal to me means behavior that is not harmful to self and others. Self preservation is a natural instinct.
what is most common/ socialy accepted/legal. its bs this word normal. when i do say thats not normal or whatever, i dont mean like something is wrong with you or the situation, its just not a everyday/everybody thing. its ok.
Number 1. Can't be 2, since different things are socially acceptable in different countries (or if we're talking on country level instead of globally, then number 2 is also correct). In my opinion at least.
Normal = What people think is average and acceptable.
Not Normal = Something people think is strange, immoral, or stupid.
Perception of what is normal and not normal will vary from person to person. Nothing here is based on empirical research.
