What do you think about russia propping up al-assad

Very recently Russia has gone from backing Bashar Al-Assad politically to actually providing him with direct military support. So far the Russians have been pounding the rebels with their air power but word is that they're bringing in the ground pounders. How do you feel about this?

Its good the Middle East needs brutal, strong leaders 5
Its horrible, Bashar is a thug who has lost his right to rule 1
I don't care either way 6
We should declare war on Russia for targeting American backed rebels 2
We should ally with Russia and crush the so-called Free Syrian Army 9
Help us keep this site organized and clean. Thanks!

Deepening its hold on the Eastern Mediterranean, especially in Syria has been an interest of Russia for
centuries. And obviously backing Bashar Al- Assad is the best way to do it. Russia will do whatever it takes...and with their military in Syria they can play their games fairly easily.

Indeed, but historically this should panic America and Western Europe. Regardless at this point there isn't much we can do about it outside of arming volatile rebel groups. Obviously we're not going to declare war on Russia unless they invade Poland or something

Technically there's little America can do either way. Declaration of war on Russia will kick start WW3, now that's something no one wants...But I don't think Russia will make a move on Poland anytime soon.

Thankfully, I agree, but Russia has certainly gotten more aggressive as of late. Putin knows just how far he can take things without going too far so there's that. Realistically our biggest concern is a Cold War 2.0, if it hasn't already commenced

Judging from the way he manipulated the situation so far, I'm not entirely sure what he has in mind. If he's smart he won't engage in war just like that, that way he'll lose way more than what he wishes to obtain.

Yes, plus the Middle East is a sectarian can of worms so who knows if this will blow up in his face

Russia is doing the right thing because they understand "The Iron Fist". In this region, dominance thru power is the only thing that gets respect. The US's misguided diplomacy/military approach only leaves these countries to paramilitary rat gangs.

The US is being too interventionist. They need to back off and only take minimal action.

And let them tell us where we can't fly while they bomb
the wrong people. If Obama had any balls he would tell tem we are the USA don't fuck wit us or our friends. Shoot down one of our planes and you won't have one plane left to fly.

What the US understands is precision high tech targeting which creates overwhelming force multipliers. It obliterated Iraq but did not win the peace.

Both sides are the wrong side. You are stupid to even want to be there. Al-Assad is the only one with balls brutal enough to keep the peace thru fear. The Russian bombings are really only pansy shit. Wake up and smell the roses.

We never should have Iraq. They were keeping Iran in check. We have a habit as a country of overthrowing the wrong dictator. and leaving a vacuum for a worse one.
I didn't say we should be there. We are there. If you are going to there we should use our power to do what our generals and intelligence people are telling us ~ Obama. I don't like war. If we quit do you think ISIS will say OK we quit too?

A afterthought. The whole world has been at war since modern man and Neanderthals.
The whole world not just two country's or tribes
Even the Americas before Europeans showed up.

I am in basic agreement with most of what you are saying. The best military policy would be to unofficially give limited air support to Iran so they can fight ISIS on the ground. If we keep the balance of power relatively equal both sides will kill each other.

We keep the Kurds happy to keep their oil flowing.

I assure you, the FSA are just as bad and corrupt, if not worse than, Al-Asaad. At least Al-Asaad was able to control ISIS from gaining power.

I'm shocked that the Russians haven't disposed of Putin yet. He has completely bankrupted his country, bringing back the empty store shelves of the 1960's, all so he can strut around like the pompous little tyrant he is.
His crowning achievement over the last ten years was sending troops into the Ukraine and shooting down an unarmed civilian airliner.
Too bad the old CIA hit squads aren't allowed to take out the trash, any more.

Putin has the highest approval rating of all the leaders in the G7 and it was at an all time high amidst the crowning achievements you listed. He also upped the GDP, decreased the murder rate by police reform, cut the pop living below the poverty line in half and helped start the New Development Bank as an alternative to the World Bank and IMF.

All ancient history. The GDP is in the toilet now, because his whole economic basis rested on fuel.
And you are perfectly right, the Russians love him. Who wouldn't? If you don't, you go to prison! You obviously read the news so you know that all who oppose him go directly to jail, and don't pass go, even a few kids singing anti Putin slogans in some church. Hooliganism? Please! They were a real danger to society, weren't they?

It seems like Russia did more in 5 days then what NATO did there in 1 year. I think that Russia has a right to strike ISIS in Syria as much as any other country that is currently doing so(UK, UAE, Canada, France, Australia) and probably more so than the others since Russia received a direct request for military help from Assads government and their military partnership spans decades due to Russia having a naval facility on the coast in Tartus. And ISIS is trying to claim the North Caucasus within their caliphate as well.

Speculations of Iran moving boots to fight with the Syrian Army and with Russia thinking about doing the same... fun times are ahead.

Yeah, what a time to be alive. I'm curious to see just how far Russia is willing to go. To Russia's credit they usually know when to press and when to back off, but honestly who knows what the future holds

Right, that explains why all he has done since taking office is wage war pretty much everywhere. I think he blew up a hospital in Afghanistan the other day? Killed maybe a couple dozen civilians? No biggie.

What happened at the hospital is disturbing, but I doubt our military meant to target it and MSF...why would they? It seems likely that it was a screwup and America has been very reserved militarily compared to 2001 - 2009

Okay why would we make ourselves look bad by bombing members of an aid group that is almost universally liked? My guess is that it was a tragic accident and someone is going to lose their rank as a punishment
