What do you think about "black" names?

I often wonder what black people are thinking when using the names they use. As with the following:

Putting La, Ta, Sha, Na, Ma and so on in front of Keisha, Quisha, Niqua, Quanda, Wanda...I've even seen LaTaKeisha and other such combos.

There was a woman on a talk show named LaCreesha who named her daughter SeCreesha. Are you kidding me??!!

And then there's ones named after cars (Lexus is a common one), gems (Diamond) and other such material posessions (Chanel, Prada). Oh, and lest we forget....the liquor category! Champagne, Tequila, Crystal.....

Then we have the boys, Ta, La, Ma, Ty, Q'.... Vontre, Donte, Shawn, Quan.

The wanna-be "classy" names.....the most ridiculous one ever might have been a black guy on cops named Don Perignon....YES....Don...NOT Dom. I don't doubt they spelled Perignon wrong as well, probably Perryone or something.

So what do you think?

I'm black and I think it's RIDICULOUS!! 17
I'm black and I think it's not only absurd but it hurts us as a race!! 10
I'm black and I think it's great!! 18
I'm black and I don't think it matters. 10
I'm not black and I think it's absurd!! 43
I'm not black and I think it's great!! 16
I'm not black and I don't think it matters. 30
I'm not black and I admit I pre-judge based on a "ghetto" name. 35

It's a cultural thing. Your idea of absurd is from a purely subjective point of view.

I feel the name "John" is a bit silly.

    • Well you're pretty much alone in that thought. "John" is silly compared to LaTaKiesha? GMAB. No comparison. Are you really comparing a Biblical name to some made up cluster-fuck of ghetto gibberish?

        All names are made up.

No offense to any Johns out there, but they named a toilet after you. That is silly to me.

I don't see it's any different to people naming their children after the French region of Brittany but spelling it Britney. It's just a name and it's just a spelling.

My brother and I have biblical names and my sister the name of a great queen (actually my name was the name of a king too but it's disputed and doesn't appear in history books - we don't talk about it). The child of a muslim friend of mine has the same name as my brother but spelled differently. He chose it because it's kind of islamic but also English-sounding, so that his son would fit in. I see this as no more than an act of love.

Also, my own middle name was borrowed from an American actor (because my dad has the same middle name, for the same reason, and passed it on). Lots of great Englishmen had this middle name too, but it gets interpreted by my friends as "Spanky".

I love my language and the etymology of words and names (my surname pins me to a specific hill in a specific town five hundred years ago), but am I bothered by people inventing new names? No, of course not. It's just a new chapter in this book we humans are writing for ourselves.

    • Well you must understand the MOTIVATION for the name, not just the name. We all know Mercedes was a name before it was a car, however the motivation behind some people naming their daughter that is what makes it trashy or not.

We all know that every culture uses names that many may consider strange or misspelled. That is not the point. The point here is the volume and the absurdity of the names.

I really think I misunderstood your question. I was thinking about the names themselves rather than the motivation for those names. So, to get it straight, you were talking about people who give their children names that "sound" classy but really aren't, as if their children could ever be that classy?

        Comment Hidden ( show )

        • Well no, not as harsh as you describe...not that th eparents "think" they are giving a classy name to a child that could never be that classy....more that the parent(s) are subscribing to a ghetto system that ultimately hurts their kids. Is it ignorance, is it a wanna-be GHETTO(-as it doesn't exist in the "real" world)) class status or what? The names seem to have ZERO meaning behind them....so what is the ultimate meaning and why use such a disapproved-of naming system in a society that rejects this in every sense of it's being?? I can totally understand naming a kid after a Biblical figure or an ancestor but naming a kid after a ...Vontre or ...Quan...that's what I don't understand. If there's an understanding of who the originator of the name is then it's OK for most people but these made up ghetto names just keep people in the ghetto...

I admit, if I was looking thru job applications and I was deciding from John, LaQuan and LaKeisha I would call John first. Knowing this, why do people give their children these ghetto names? No hope for their kids?? or some kind of false "hood-rich" hope for their kids...which isn't a "plus" for the working man......

Well I'm white and my girlfriend is black. Her name is Kahdesha. I don't see why the names are "silly". Don't names define who we are? Don't our names grow into our image, and not the other way around? If we had a child I would be happy to give it a unique name that would stand out. As for 'John', do you think the first person named John had a meaning for it? No! It was made up and unique. God you people are ignorant.

I'm black and I have the hardest time with these names!! I don't necessarily think Diamond is that bad of a name just because it's an actual object, but these made up names are extreme. I met this girl named Tanjareen once. (Like the fruit, just misspelled) I almost could not hold a straight face. People think that regular names are "white" names and we are connecting with our roots when we give our children "african" names. We live in America people. If you want to connect to your roots, move to Africa!! There are plenty of Africans with regular names, let's not be ignorant. And don't be mad when LaSondra'qua can't find a decent job cause her name makes her sound like a hood rat. I could go on for days...

Why do you care so much what people name their kids, it's not your kid or your life.
Naming your kid a "ghetto" name will also carry on from generation to generation. So it probably won't ever end.

    • Good point. This OP is being extremely harsh with their criticism of blacks who name their children in such a fashion. Why do YOU care? This planet has a plethora of things to set a disagreeable person, such as yourself, off with a tirade about the utter stupidity of it. Why is this issue bothering you SO much that you had to create a post about it? Are you black?

Not only do i find them totally absurd, but raucously hilarious as well.

The issue isnt the names themselves, i think. The issue stems from african-american communities trying desperately to form some type of identity separate from the white man. Im not entirely sure why, but naming your kids in a fashion that only Dr. Seuss would find serious confuses me.

But its largely systemic. I think that these strange names are, quite honestly, fuelled by a dislike or anger towards white america. When was the last time you met a black guy named Henry or William or Sean? I never have. And dont get me wrong, name your kids whatever you like. But these clown names arent being bestowed upon children out of love, theyre being given to make sure everyone knows theyre black.

And thats some pretty dense reverse racist bullshit right there; my brothers.

I admit most of those names sound bizarre to me, but it is a cultural thing. If you live in your own, insular subculture in any country, certain trends and traditions naturally arise. Some of the typical Black American names are derived from Caribbean names or emulate their style. Others are more materialistic and less meaningful, inspired by brands and products. I feel sorry for any child given a name which will have them prejudged or bullied by others.

What I think is a shame is that we have centuries of the same names recycled over and over, especially Biblical names, so to us anything that deviates from the norm or obviously signifies something is strange. If someone names their child "Love", or "Courage" people think it's odd, yet people will readily name their child "Mark" which means "Dedicated to Mars", "James" which means "He Who Supplants" etc.

Most of us don't speak Hebrew but just follow tradition - we choose typical names that we think sound good regardless of their meaning.

A name is a name, there is no criteria. Names are not physical things, nor do they have to be a certain way. A name does not determine if a person is classy. Every culture has ridiculous names, even white people. Is the name Paris still "classy" after Pairs Hilton? Is Linsey still a "classy" name after Linsey Lohan? How about Charlie after Charlie Sheen? Is Amber not a gemstone? What about old white ladies named Pearl? I've met many white people named Jack Daniels and Sam Adams, are they not alcoholic beverages? And lets not forget the forever stupid Maximus, Becky, Arnold, Leslie, Seth, Daphnie, Gordan, Wilma, Herbert, Zoe, Archibald, Molly, Ernest, Ally, Hugh, Abigail, Theadore, Gertrude, Sabastian, Marybeth, I think you get my point, but just in case you don't, a person's name can be whatever they want it to be. A person's name doesn't have to be for anyone elses liking. Haven't you ever heard the saying "never judge a book by it's cover"?

      • Good question, who IS Vontre and why is "he" used as part of a name?? I bet there's NO black person on Earth who can answer that, and THAT is the point....the names are meaningless, ridiculous and harmful to children. I mean, if they were any good, their use would be widespread but since the names are only used in a ghetto fashion, it's proof that the are no good and offer no value to society, history or anything.
