What do you feel when you find out a song you like is a cover?

I think most people have probably had this experience-what if you like what you think is a new song but you later find out it's a cover?

When you listened to the original song after finding out, how did you feel?

It's OK, I usually think the new version is better. 18
It's disappointing and I lose respect for the cover artist. 5
I usually end up liking the old version better. 12
It's OK if the cover is changed considerably, not just copied. 8
It's OK if the song really truly suits the cover artist. 9
It's OK if the song is very meaningful to the cover artist. 5
It's never OK to just copy someone else's work. Boooo! 1
I'm usually stunned, I can't believe this song is actually an oldie!! 5
Why wasn't this song more popular before, it's a hit now!! 2
I feel duped! But it doesn't change how I feel about the song or artist 7

I don't care if it's a cover or not. If it sounds good... well, then it's good. :D

Great question. Completely original, intelligent, not offensive. Go you!

I always feel a bit silly when I find out something is a cover and I previously didn't think it was. Especially if I've been telling people about how great it is.

  • It rarely happens to me, one of the few examples was Kiss - I heard the Tom Jones/Art of Noise version first and Prince's original later. And I still think that Jones' is better.

I dont mind covers, as long as it is made really clear that it is a cover and not the bands song. I suppose a lot of people think "Hallelujah" is a jeff buckley song, even though its a Leonard Cohen song. I generally dont like to prefer the cover to the original, but jeff buckley's version of Hallelujah is one of the best songs ever recorded.

    Other:

Usually I already know if it's a cover. As for how I feel about it... that depends entirely on how good it sounds and how original it was.

If the cover artist tries to completely mimic the original song, I find it boring. I'll go listen to the original, kthanksbye.

However if the cover artist takes the song and makes it sound new and refreshed, or if they sound *better*... then I really love that.

I think I usually end up liking the cover better for whatever reason. It seems after it's regurgitated by another artist with their own spin on it the song gets an extra boost of creativity.
    Examples:
The Postal Service covered such great heights...i do believe
Seether-Careless Whisper and a beatles song but I can't remember the name
and of course Framing Hanley with Lollipop.
I absolutely can't stand lil wayne singing HIS song. ha. Framing Hanley nailed it..but I guess it depends on what genre you're into eh?

It really depends on who is doing the cover. I love it when Nina Simone takes a song and makes it her own. She can make any song beautiful beyond belief.

      You didn't know that?

This is how rap & hip-hop stars get away with sampling other songs in their music... they pick stuff from the 80s - or earlier - and the kids today think it's "new".
