What do you do when you're uncomfortable?

I am talking about when you are around people and an environment where you just don't feel like yourself. For some reason, you're trying your very best to be you but its not working. Its not coming out right, instead it feels like you're forcing yourself to be you. Because you're uncomfortable, it doesn't feel right. Rather than being you,you feel like someone else. You're trapped in someone else's body and personality due to your surroundings. So what do you do when you're in this position?

I try not to let it get to me but really, I'm miserable 33
I try to ignore it since I know there's other times I feel comfortable 26

Lightly tug on my hair, bite my nails, touch my face frequently, rub my forearms, hunch over, observe my surroundings intensely, look down a lot, walk quietly and meekly, shuffle around, hold onto something I'm comfortable with, chew on something I shouldn't be chewing on, lightly bite the tip of my thumb, lightly bite my lower lip and scratch the back of my head.

    • You sound super awkward, tht is exactly what I don't want to happen.
I just play with the top of my head (it looks like I have lice) and intensely look around to where I should look around but it fails instead I make others feel awkward

Yes, I'm shy enough for it to get in the way of my life quite often. Despite that I think most of those awkward habits I mentioned are pretty average (but I do them a lot more often than average). I know people who have really weird awkward habits though, like yawning every time there is a gap in the conversation.

This happens to me when sometimes I'm with friends but I'm feeling down or tired. They can be all laughing and having fun but I'm just there like "ha ha". So when that happens I've learnt to just be myself and they understand that I'm having a bad day :)

    • Oh well they're your friends, what if they're roommates? And it's really hard to warm up to them

If I can excuse myself, I will. If I'm not in a position to excuse myself (like it's a work thing), I grit my teeth and get on with it. Everything is temporary.
