What do you do when you listen to music?

Everybody loves music (except for those rare few.)
I was just wondering, what happens when you listen to music?

I will make up movies in my mind that go with the music. 25
Nothing. I hate music. 2
I will focus on the instruments being used. 13
Get high/drunk. 3
I will dance. 6
I will pay close attention to the lyrics. 6
I will sing along. 26
Help us keep this site organized and clean. Thanks!

We'll it depends, with certain music I will lay on my bed with headphones and eyes closed paying close attention to every single detail ( the microphones/mount eerie, the books, the avalanches, deafheaven, mbv)

Others I will put on when I'm doing things like washing up or walking somewhere ( death grips, brand new, Wye oak, Kurt vile, radiohead, Danny Brown)

Others I will only play if I need to relax or go to sleep ( the antlers, the antlers or the antlers)

However, in every scenario I move my head to the music, not just the beat, but if there is a key change my head moves to the left or right depending on if it's high or low, and if I'm alone I pace, I pace like the fucking wind, tapping and banging every single thing in sight in time with what's playing.
I like playing my guitar along with music too, most of the time mirroring the song but sometimes I like to deviate, make up things that fit,

People think I'm crazy when I say I have a thing for David Caruso, but I do, I really do.

Sometimes I'll have to stop playing when I think someone calling my name...it sucks. I still listen to metal and other subgenres of rock (I recommend Kings of leon, Imagine Dragons and Gangs of Ballet to everyone ;) )

For some reason when I'm listening to music in my room I have to pace back and forth across the room. I've done that for years /: it's habitual I guess..

Mess around on my phone, draw, watch tv with music playing instead of the audio, work, sing along.
I listen to music almost 24 hours a day 7 days a week, so I do everything while listening to music.

I know some day you'll be the sun in some body else's sky
But why, why can't it be mine..........

I love that song. You botched the lyrics a little but I'll let it slide since you're in mourning for your hooker.

Hard to explain because I do listen to the intruments mostly. It's not a conscious thing, I sort of just relax listening to someone who truly understands their instrument. I'm a huge fan of trumpet and jazz drums. But I also like to listen to every single detail of a song. I like to visualize what every band member is doing at the same time. Sometimes I'll sing but not too often. Listening to classical music i just marvel at the beauty of the song itself. I just sit and take it in. Listening to rap, well when I do listen to it I listen for rhyme schemes, and what not. It sucks because many rappers are too lyrically focused and they think this is good rapping. Rapping like poetry can be enhanced using literary techniques and what not. Which is upsetting because it could be that much more impressive. I'll usually just listen to if it if I need some diversity. Rock music, again it deals with the instruments and really understanding what they're doing. I've come to realize many people while they do enjoy music, do not understand what makes something good. In the same way people can't truly appreciate photography, art, film or literature. It's weird and sounds elitist but it's really not. I'm not some hipster scum bag who thinks my opinion in music is better, what I'm trying to say is that music, like anything else has two kinds of people the casual listener and the studier. While it does sound like I'm dismissing every casual listeners opinion, I'm really not because anyone can be a student of music. Anyone can study music and learn what makes music truly great. They don't need to even play instruments. To me a casual listener decided their opinion based upon what they feel is good while a student of the music decides what is good based upon appreciation, rational thinking and knowledge. You wouldn't expect the casual moviegoer to understand Kubrick the same way you wouldn't expect someone who grew up on top 40 radio to understand Beethoven. Not to say they wouldn't, but again it's what you do when you're listening that decides this and anyone who wants to can change. What I'm trying to say is that I don't really listen to music as much as I examine it and fall in love with the writers craft. Ever genre has it's amazing artist and to think differently is ignorant.

Sorry to veer off, I've been trying to explain that for the longest time but couldn't find the words until now.

I'm THAT guy who WILL pay close attention to the details of the music. And that's what I personally think makes listening to music more appealing. I don't necessarily think it's just about the image of the band, or the lyrics. To me, it's more than that. I've changed my views of music within the past couple years, and it's been even more of a pleasure for me to listen to music nowadays.

I usually listen to music while I'm surfing the web, like right now for example I'm listening to some Lovedrug. So like it's good background noise. I don't really move my head, but I do silently move lips so I feel like I'm the singer. Hell some times I will just flat out air guitar all while in the comfort of sitting on my chair.
