What do you do when you get bad news?

I got bad news today about my health. The hospital thought my disability woud be temporary but I was told today it will be permanent :o( Anyway, my usual attitude is that 'everything happens for the best' but I'm struggling to find a positive reason - apart from the fact I now understand people like myself better. Anyway, I just wondered how you deal with bad news.

Have a smoke, think it through and look for a solution if there's any, if not than i just go with it.

I either think about it over and over to the point where I just have to to sleep.

OR, if it's possible, sometime's I'll just choose to be ignorant of the situation, or just accept the fact that I can't do anything about it, so fuck it.

Talk about it with family and friends then go on doing something entertaining to forget it for a while...

I feel numb. I listen to music. I don't really talk to other people. But eventually, I get over it. I'm sorry about your bad news, I wish you the best of luck.

On the face of it, I deal with it very well, but it's like a detonation on the floor of an extremely deep lake. The surface looks calm but there are certain ripples there that wouldn't have been there if the bomb hadn't gone off.

I sort of zone out. Try not to think about it. Go into denial.

I spend money... on things I don't necessarily need... for ex I found out bad news about my health about 5 yrs ago & the next day I bought a new car... a $30,000 car ... which I couldn't afford...... ended up max-ing out a few of my credit cards... then I drank a lot of alcohol for the next two weeks... though I do not suggest this way of dealing with things.. it made me feel better... for the short run..

I never really have any negative reaction to bad news regarding health. When I found out I had diabetes I just thought alright, what do I have to do to live and just go from there.

  • I couldn't care less. I have had alot of things happen in my life, but I don't care much about it. There are alot more things that could happen in my life that are bad, they haven't happened yet so I can't really give a god answer to how I would react. I don't think I would care much about it, though.

Sometimes I walk.. sometimes I sleep.
Sometimes I cry.. sometimes I eat.
I used to get drunk or smoke cigs but I have gotten over those impulses for bad situations.

It really depends on what kind of news. Finding out I'm disabled would definitely make me want to cry for a bit just because it would just be shocking and scary.

I walk when it's bad news that pisses me off.
I sleep when I get sad.
I eat when it's something I need time to think about.
And sometimes I cry for all of those reasons. I cry when I get overwhelmingly pissed also.

  • Except it and get on with life. "I once complained about my shoes to I meet a man with no feet" If you have a roof over your head and food in your belly you are in the top 3% richest people in the world.

Im not sure where or how i developed my response to bad news or uncomfortable situations. But i always seem to laugh, and the worse the news the larger the laughing fit is. ive even been called out on it a few times and never really had a a answer as to why. But man did that shit get me in a lot of trouble in high school.

If it's extremely bad news I cry and then try to think about what to do as calmly as I can.

It depends on what the bad news is. Failing a test is different from my mom dieing. I would handle them both differently.

  • as i am addicted to wow, when i get bad news, i just return to my computer and play. that makes me forget about the real world and all the problems in it.

Ah, I never talk to anyone about it. Not rationally, anyway.

Honestly, when I get really bad news that I can't do shit about, I throw an immature tantrum initially. Maybe it's because I don't want to show that I'm hurt by crying or talking....I show anger. No, not even anger. More like hatred. I hate who told me the news, I hate who's here that isn't ME and directly affected. I shout, I tell people to fuck off, I'm a baby. I want people to pity me-no not even pity me, but fear me and feel like they have to help me or excuse me for acting like this, at least. But after the initial shock, I normalize and deal with it in a rational manner. OK, I have to do x, y and z to deal with this. That's what I do, then. Life goes on. I have kids and a household to take care of. Deal.

  • Talking to someone almost always helps. Thinking positive, recounting what's good in your life will help.
