What do you do when people take over your post?

Sometimes it's chit-chat, sometimes it's an argument. Sometimes it's relevant to the post, often it's not. What do you do when 2 people (sometimes more) get deep into a personal conversation on your story/poll and create a lot of back and forth posts between themselves?

Do you let it go on? Do you delete posts? Do you ignore it? Do you enjoy it?

What bothers you more, being hijacked for idle chit chat or being overtaken by someone's personal beef?

is it normal to want to know how you manage your replies?

    • I don’t know who you are. I don’t know what you want. If you are looking for ransom, I can tell you I don’t have money. But what I do have are a very particular set of skills; skills I have acquired over a very long career. Skills that make me a nightmare for people like you. If you let my IIN story go, that’ll be the end of it. I will not look for you, I will not pursue you. But if you don’t, I will look for you, I will find you, and I will kill you.

This is an awful confession to make but after a few hours, I stop reading replies to stories I've written and skip over the notifications. After a week (or sometimes a month), then I go back and look at what's been said. I do always look back, just not immediately.

So, in consequence, I don't give a fig what people say on my stories. If people want to have a chit chat, I'm glad I gave them the opportunity. Often though, if it's moving off-topic and seems like it's personal to them, I give them privacy and don't really read it. I mean, it's my story, but it's not my website or my conversation, is it? To use a real world example, if two people start chatting after I introduce them, I don't tell them it's not allowed or that all talk is owned by me.

I would consider it more like they are chatting (or arguing even) in your house about something you don't want them to. Would you not do something then?

A few people said that a while back, but I never see IIN or my stories as my house. Because it's a social place without any locks on the doors, I see it more like a pub. And my stories just happen to be tables that I placed in the pub. It doesn't matter to me what anyone says when they get to the table.

I concede good sir, your analogy is > my analogy.

Lets just say that it WERE your house though. How would you treat the situation, I am curious?

Hmm, I'd be a bit pissed off. I suppose another analogy would be if it was my guestbook and people just started writing things to each other over it when I wanted to keep it nice.

Problem is, I'm guilty of being part of that vandalism quite often. You know what I wish? That there was a button OPs could press so that people couldn't get into conversation on their posts. It wouldn't bother me much if a message said you can't reply to this person any more times and it's better for the OP than having to deal with lots of notifications and messages that are irrelevant. Maybe someone should raise it with TheManagement? I don't know how it would work exactly but technically it'd be workable. He'd might be amenable to the idea too because I don't think he necessarily wants chit-chat.

Come to think of it, if the OP could do it on individual conversations within posts as opposed to whole posts themselves, maybe that's an answer which suits all situations. Like anything, it's open to abuse but there's no obvious way for it to be really abused (as long as you couldn't stop a conversation before it had even started), i.e. stop people replying other certain people's replies at all (rather just stop people replying to replies of replies and big long chains).

Another solution would be to have an option to turn off notifications for anything that is a "reply to a reply". Hmm.

I like those ideas, but I'm not likely to suggest them myself considering TheManagement hasn't been active with suggestions for a while (or at least not with mine anyway). I think he's either too busy, I wore him out with my constant feedback all the time, or both. Lol. I actually think he may have had to get a job or something and so doesn't have a whole lot of time here anymore, kind of like me. :)

I usually don't mind. There are exceptions though.

I have had my comments deleted for (what was seemingly to me) no reason at all. One time, after noticing that my comment got deleted, I even personally addressed the OP with an apologetic response and also addressed the question with my opinion on the matter, and my comment got deleted again. I thought that seemed a bit rude, but I guess that person just didn't like me or something. Anyway, I try not to let it get to me too bad.

I have also deleted comments off of my posts, but most of the time it's just when idiots are trolling or something of that sorts.

I delete the entire thing. I don't recall any arguments breaking out but there have been a few off topic comments that overtook a story of mine as well as comments that were just unnecessary. The worst was a conversation about....nevermind. if someone makes drama on one of my stories I will likely delete it. However idle chitchat that isn't offensive dosent bother me. Hell, I contribute to that nonsense sometimes.

This is why I make posts on another account. I really, really dislike getting notifications for irrelevant conversations, which happens often. So, I just pop back onto my post account every now and again, and don't have to put up with the constant notifications.

I would never delete anybody's comment, regardless of how irrelevant or even offensive it is. I'm not protecting their reputation, if they say mean things, people should be allowed to see how mean they are, in my opinion.:P I personally disagree with deleting other people's comments, although I understand why others would use it, and don't mind too much when others use it on their posts (correctly that is, rather than just because they disagree with someone's opinion or something like that).

I want anyone to say whatever they want on my posts, chit chat, debate, I don't mind! As long as I get good comments as well (it bothers me when people don't leave them, like they don't care about the post and are just there to chat). If it was all irrelevant, it would make me think some people are using my post very selfishly, and it would affect my view of the site (negatively). But if people have fun chatting on my posts, then it tends to make me happy, and I wouldn't want them to feel like they can't do it. Although, again, I can understand why others might completely disagree with me, I'm just talking about my own posts here.

As for whether I read them, usually only if I'm interested in what they're saying. However, I've never had much bullying on my posts, and I'm not sure how I'd deal with that actually. I don't think that's something I would tolerate on a post of mine, though. Hmm, I'm not sure.

Edit: as for what bothers me more, definitely personal beef! That one really annoys me, actually. Usually because it's not relevant, and it's just someone preaching stupid crap. And then it gets into a whole petty argument. It annoys me that either I indirectly started that, or that someone took advantage of my post to make these stupid rants at people. Ugh!
