so if some idiot punches you what do you do?
I would want to beat the crap out of them because they started it and I am not a punk.
but I realize assault charges can happen. so what would you do?

Back in HS and College days Ive been to many fights it was always a punch back, now all that feels immature and in workplace when we have a row we threaten with legal issues and stuffs. Haven't been to physical fights in like a decade. The last time I was on one my car got rammed by a drunk asshole. i beat him to the pulp, was charged with battery but got off by a lot of technicalities. Now that I look back I could have just sued him and got payed to fix the damage. If someone were to punch me today I would just deal with the person legally. However I know how younger minds work, its easy for us to forget what it was like dealing with rage issues and stuffs but keep in mind you can't change them with your lectures and stuffs, let them learn with experience.
I wouldn't hit back, as I'm a pacifist, I'd probably walk away.
What the vast majority of people who punch you want is a reaction, so if you just take punches and keep walking away until you get to a place where you know there's some CCTV or some other form of protection, they're likely to stop and if they don't, you have backup to your case.
The last time someone hit me I grabbed the person, and pinned to them down to show em what I'm working with.

Tho I should mention, if whoever punched me was a giant muscle-ape... I'm gonna run away. As much as I like to smash an aggressor's face in, I know when I'm beat.
If it's not a muscly ape and I'm in Bulgaria, I'm gonna mess that mofo up. You don't just attack anyone without a proper reason. People that do this garbage in Bulgaria are usually massive drunks, or junkies... They both get beaten by other people regularly.
I'd clock the fucker in the face. Any idiot who tries to throw hands with you and fails miserably is gonna slither away with his tail between his legs, not call the cops, which is largely seen as a bitch move if you've lost a fight.
I understand it's probably smarter to not do anything and call the police if someone hits you first. But, eh, it's a long and annoying process. Just beat the fuck outta the loser and call it a day.
No one fucked with me or my friends in high school. I made some good $$$ for beating the shit out of bullies for kids. The cool thing is that I ended up becoming really good friends with them and gave them their money back.

Depends on the situation, 1v1 or 1v group of thugs. I'm a weak motherfucker so violence for me is really a 0 or 10 situation. With zero being calling in the cops and running away and 10 being using weapons to win even if it kills the guy.
I've had people try to get physical with me a number of times. What I've always done was to get up in their face and intimidate them until they back down. Only guy this didn't work on was too drunk to fight anyway, luckily. But I don't recommend this unless you're a relatively big, or an otherwise intimidating guy. People often consider me intimidating, for whatever reason, so for me it works. I don't think it would work so well for others.
You are allowed by law (in most countries) to use reasonable force to defend yourself. In the UK that means you can block an incoming blow and return one blow ONLY, so make it a good one!
Almost always punch back. That's what my father taught me and that's what I will teach my son. There are rare exceptions of course, if its a child, or if its a policeman, or if he has a gun. If its a tiny girl just slap back dont KO her.
Where I come from if you let someone punch you and not do anything people would lose respect for you and probably start hitting on your girl right infront of you. I believe sometimes it's better to get your ass beat than to back down. Like if someone challenges you to a fight and hes around your size, you have to show up. It's better to get beatup than bitch out.
If you are 5'4 and the guy challenging you is 6'4 thats a different story and ppl will get that.
I've never been punched but due to me being scared of charges as well I'd probably try to cause a seen so others can see they are clearly the aggressor. And proceed from there. Then again I've never been punched so I cant say
Assault charges are for the assaulter. If someone punches you first then start swinging on them, it’s totally justified.
If you cant prove anything then neither can they, and the case is dropped. If it even gets made into one in the first place, which it almost never does. Been there done that several times. If somebody hits you, fuck them up.
"He started it!" is only a defence in Mommy Court, and even there most judges will disregard it, tell the defendant he should grow up and sentence him to a term of imprisonment in his room.
Self-defence is a legal defence virtually everywhere, but it has to be proportional and reasonable. So if someone socks you, you have a reasonable fear that they're going to do it again and there's no way for you to disengage from the situation, yeah, you can hit back. That doesn't mean a punch will justify you beating him to the ground and kicking him until he's unconscious.
Also, you should bear in mind that it's entirely possible to kill someone with a lucky - or rather, an unlucky - punch. If you get in a punch that knocks someone down and he hits his head on the ground hard enough, he could die due to brain trauma. Then you'd be facing a charge of manslaughter at the very least.
A criminal conviction and time spent in jail can thoroughly fuck up the rest of your life in many ways. Only you can decide if that would be worthwhile if the alternative is looking like a pussy when some inadequate dick decides to get physical.
