What do you call a shopping cart?

I've heard various terms for a shopping cart. This would be referring to a wheeled, walk-behind shopping cart, not the handheld baskets or big flatbed carts anything else. What do you call it?

Please comment, and include a general locale if you'd be so kind, interested in seeing if it's strongly regional terms or completely random.

Wagon 5

Most people call it a shopping trolley or just a 'trolley' in Australia too.

    • So do the bums and hobos steal them over there too? Does the name change to something besides 'trolley' if a bum is in posession of it? I'm being totally serious.

If a bum is in possession of it it changes to a queef

Not really, it's usually drunk teenagers stealing and abandoning them.

We don't say "bums" over here to refer to homeless people either - a bum is another word for butt or arse. We say hobo or tramp.

        • So, what do they kep their stuff in? That's what they do here, put it in a cart so it's mobile. Plus it allows for easier movement of thier cans/bottles/recyclables.

    • Everyone over there calls it that? Here in the US, you never know. There's no standard.

The stores pretty much all call them 'carts'. There's the 'cart corral' in the parking lot, the employees who have to go bring the carts back in are called 'cart wranglers', the signs all say 'return carts here'....but people just call them all kinds of random things. I find it wierd. I like 'cart'. I could never call it a buggy or wagon, those one's really irk me.

As far as I know, everyone here calls them trolleys. I've never heard anyone refer to them as anything else.

Do you have a time machine too then? Or do you live in some funny part of the world where Woolworths still exists?

I live in Australia, where we do still have Woolworths. I didn't know it was a funny part of the world, though.

    • There was a homeless man killed by a car hitting him in my old town. I don't know why, but the newspaper article made specific mention of how badly damaged his shopping cart was and other things about his cart. It just seemed odd. Maybe this is where my obsession began.

I call it a carriage.. My family does too. I moved from home and now where I live people look at me weird when I say it so I've adapted to calling it a cart. It's annoying but it saves me having to explain why I say carriage..

    • Where'd you live where it was called a carriage? So, in NC they say buggy, but you call it 'cart', is that correct? You just dislike buggy, so you went with cart? Or what?

Yeah, I'm writing a book. Or a term paper. Well, it's really just an essay with a commemorative tattoo to be done (extra credit).

Heh, I was born in NC. Didn't ever live there as anything other than an infant though, only visited a couple times since then, so I never noticed this. I did notice they say some FUNNY things though....

I lived in Massachusetts when I called it a carriage but I honestly think most people in Mass call it cart. And I call it cart because buggy is not the rational term for it. I mean.. wtf is a buggy? :\ Haha.

Oh that's neat. This is a good place to collect data I suppose.

I was down in Florida when I first heard it called buggy. I called it a carriage and two people from Georgia and Alabama I lived with at the time just looked at me and laughed.. they said, "no, it's a BUG-GEY." I was so annoyed. -_-

EVERYONE down near Georgia and NC say buggy. I had never heard it until I moved to NC in May and hadn't any clue what they were talking about.. Now I hear it all the time. :(

  • WTF is wrong with me? Look for my next poll, IIN to be this obsessed with shopping carts? It does seem awfully stupid, but I can't stop wanting to delve further into shopping cart lore.

New topic: have you ever seen anyhting made from a shopping cart? I've seen a couple used as BBQ grills.

  • There's a store chain here that has a lock on the carts. You put a quarter in it and it lets one cart go, and then when you are done, everyone takes their own carts back so they can get their quarter back. It's only a quarter, but it works every time, there is NEVER a stray cart anywhere near that place. It's really a very good idea.

DOes anyone else have anything like this near them?

Virtually all supermarkets here in the UK have that coin system. I've never seen one that doesn't.

i lived in slovakia for almost my whole life and those are EVERYWHERE...i recently moved to america and was shocked to see you could just take them.

i usually dont use quarters (well in slovakia a euro or 50 cent peice) but slugs, and sometimes if you are a member of a store (like you have that card) you get a free slug with the logo on it and stuff.

just to throw this in, there are no bag boys in slovakia it is uheard of! i always used to start bagging my own stuff and someone would do it for me and it was really weird at first...it makes me think that are americans are lazy. oh and when i first saw one of those machines that give you change here, i yelled 'omg it gives you the change! how does it do that?' and the casheir was looking at me like wtf. haha

      • The store I'm talking about doesn't bag your things either. And they charge you for bags. You can either buy them, bring your own or you can take their throw-away boxes for free. I like that store.
