They're just for fun. To believe all this bullshit is stupid. Do people not realize that BILLIONS of people play videogames? And how often do we hear about these shootings that people somehow link to violent videogames? Has anyone ever thought "Well, maybe they were just a psycho to begin with." Or maybe, these stupid parents should really stop buying games like GTA and CoD for their little 8 year old. I played games like those when I was a kid, but the difference between the games I played and games now is they all try hard to look realistic. Bloody. Games I played were pixelated and looked terrible. Now they're saying shooters train how to shoot a gun. Glenn Beck, one of those political speakers claimed Watch Dogs teaches you how to hack. A game that has you press one single button to do something that in real life would require long long lines of complex code that to the normal person would look like gibberish. Keep in mind that Glenn Beck is highly respected to many people and even people who dislike him or disagree with him may still consider him as intelligent. His video literally consisted of him reading a preview of what Watch Dogs was about, and then made the conclusion that it will teach you to become a hacker. Millions of people viewed this, and I garantee a good 50% believed that bullshit. All these adults just listen to the media. "Scientists claim they do this to you" If they did, why arent 75% of the gaming population out killing people? Instead of the small 0.0001% that are?

Totally agree. If some psycho shoots up a joint then claims a videogame inspired him to do it I think its safe to say his mind was already fucked and that game only affected him because he took it seriously due to a prior unstable mental condition

Just as this guy said, they do nothing to people and violent people were already violent. You don't need video games to know how to hurt someone but non-gamers just want something to blame. Since they've hardly played or understood games, its easy to point fingers.

Honestly, games are great fun and everyone playing them knows that its all just animated fantasy. I've met some great friends online that I wouldn't have met if it weren't for MMOs also.

Encourage you to become killers, I mean obviously.

Because 3/4 of the world's population are now murders. *sigh* okay mom.

They don't do anything to normal people.

For those already prone to violence and rage it exacerbates the monster-feelings within them; they're better off doing something calming, like meditation, to "blow off steam." For everyone else, it turns them into a couch potato and nothing more.

As for children playing violent video games, their same-sex parent is the predominant role model in their young lives when it comes to violent or aggressive behaviour.

    None of the above.

The purpose of the violence is key to determining it's nature.

Someone playing Civilization would be violent or benevolent to expand their empire. Or defending themselves from the wrath of Gandhi (OG gammers will get that).
Someone playing Mass Effect will be waging war to end it. Rallying his or her forces under a single goal ''Survival". Or sacrificing the few to save the many.
Playing Dragon Age will give the player a chance to go down a path of revenge. Hunting those who wronged you or putting the past behind you for the sake of the future.
Starcraft allows players to enter a battle of wit and strategy. An elaborate game of Chess set in a distant future.

Your question is far more complicated then you realize. In the end it comes down to the individual. How was he' she raised?. Did his or her parents distill morals and values upon said individual?. Did he or she have a positive male role model in their live?. Ect. ect. ect.

You can't blame video games, Mcdonald's, or Tyler Perry for the folly of a nation.
Raise your kids people. Raise your kids.

Not psychopaths because they like violent games. They like violent games because they're psychopaths.

Violent games give insecure people a chance to feel powerful. Do violent games encourage violent behavior in real life? I don't think so.

I think any kind of media can subtly influence behavior by reinforcing social norms. Trying to draw a one-to-one correlation between violent games and real life violence is ridiculous, but on some level one may still exist.

I read recently that there was a study that found that violent behavior related to video games was largely related to frustration with elements of the gameplay rather than the content of the game. I can't believe it took people this long to figure it out. All you have to do is spend five minutes on xbox live to see how many people are crying about their guy dying due to lag or losing the game because of "cheap" tactics.
