What do americans think/ believe about white/ caucasian south africans

Being a white south African myself i'm often pretty ticked off about how my group is potrayed by the western media (I.E Lethal Weapon , District 9) I could go into a whole charade about all 5 million of us are in fact individuals and how we are in fact not too different from every European descendant group on earth (My mother is a huge Game of Thrones Fan), and how we listen to the same songs, play the same video games, watch the same movies and have the same stereotypes attached to us in school (Jock, stoner, emo, nerd ect)But for interest sake id be interested to see what your personal opinion is- Cuz all I see from foreign news comment pages is about as much compassion as people might show to ex Nazis when it comes to any issue affecting us

Your al human 41
You are a bunch of evil neo nazi aholes 8
You even exist? 13
Who cares, i hated disrict 9 anyway 11
Help us keep this site organized and clean. Thanks!

Actually the media leads us Americans to believe there are only tribal black people in Africa. Although I do recall a particular Disney movie about a South African white girl so I know you guys exist ;). If you come here you will probably be greeted with a mix of stupid comments like, "But you're not black???" and with polite curiosity. Once you're settled in you should fit in just fine.

White people are produced by Vitamin D deficiency, higher latitudes and frost bite.

As an American, I think of South Africans the way I think of any other type of person who isn't from my country: "They're a good people, they just speak differently and have their own culture." And whenever I meet someone from a different country, I always try to befriend them. I remember at one point in elementary school my group of friends consisted of girls from Bosnia, Ethiopia and Japan. It's a shame that my state in particular (Idaho) always gets labelled by the other states as being the "white power/neo-nazi state" when in reality we are a melting pot of different cultures.

I'm sure the most common statement that White South Africans hear in America is when they respond to a question about where they're from is: "but you're not black!"
...and then Americans wonder why they get the reputation among South Africans for being ignorant.

I didn't even know there was a white SA stereotype at all really....I just thought they were just people like everyone else. Granted I assume most of them are quite well off. But other than that, certainly in Britain there is no negative stereotype that I'm aware of.

Firstly I'm not american but I would like to give an opinion to this post. In Mauritius there are quite a lot of white South Africans who now live here. My opinion of them is that they are racist and too much conceited. Once they told a white friend of mine who is married to a black women that woman who marry white man are raped in South Africa - something like that. I have seen them quite a lot in clubs and sincerely I have a very bad opinion of white South Africans.

    • That's a pity, cuz my mom has been telling me for years that she wants to go live there (She saw a 40 minute documentary on the place on TV and fell in love Lol) She keeps dropping hits about how ineed to study harder so I can take care of her and my father when I graduate (I.e pay for a safe place for them to live , hopefully abroad) Shes far more moderate than most Afrikaners in her views though, seeing as she works in a office where 95 % of her co workers are not white, she also has a rarely large number of non white friends for an Afrikaner so shell fit right in there, and btw I wont contest your point about clubbing type Afrikaners- most of those that I know personally I think of as arseholes,

I don't really care about them to be honest. I am sure I care about them as much as they care about me. They don't enter my thoughts.

The US is very used to immigrants. I hate to say it but being white helps even more. You should have no trouble here.

Here in the UK the common things to spring to mind when somebody says South Africa are:
        - Apartheid. It's unfortunate, since SA has moved on from those times, but a lot of people don't have a lot else to go on. Obviously there is residual racial tension which doesn't help shake off the past.

        - Oscar Pistorius. That was a positive association, now it's tainted by the whole 'he killed his girlfriend' thing. It's a shame since he would have been a great ambassador for SA internationally - he was pretty popular in Britain during the Paralympics.

        - District 9. "Focking prawns!" That was a good film.

        - Die Antwoord.

        - The Afrikaans accent. Like Australian mixed with Dutch. I love it.

That's about it. I mean, in terms of how people would react to you personally over here, they'd probably enjoy the accent, and find your background interesting. Many are ignorant about South Africa aside from the things I've mentioned above (including me to a certain extent) so I imagine you might be asked a lot of questions. As for you being a white South African, that's neither here nor there. When I think of South Africa, it's white South Africans that come to mind first (despite your being the minority).

We're pretty accepting of immigrants here, as long as they do as we do and try to follow the laws of the land, get a job and pay taxes. If you move to London, you'll be amongst millions of immigrants! 37% of the population were born outside the UK, and white Britons are a minority (45%).

I never really thought much about it. I have known some Afrikaners in the past and they all seemed like nice enough folks.

I do love the accent when they speak English.

A potion of my Mothers family is from South Africa and when people find out they are like "I didn't know there were white people in Africa"

We have gotten other comments like "Oh did they support apartheid" "Did you have blacks working for your household" etc.

I think why white South Africans are ridiculed for being racist is because they were the last settler group who gave back power to the Majority. Remember it was only 1993 when apartheid was finally dismantled when other countries like the United States went thru the Transition much earlier.

About being Nazis, South Africa joined the side of the Allies in 1939 and fought bravely under the banner. Many lives were lost during the war. Yes like in other countries there were a minority who supported the Nazis but this was often viewed with distrust by the majority.

There is even this sense of division among whites particularly between the Afrikaners and the English/Anglo South Africans. The Boer war which stripped the Afrikaners of control over the Republics by the British. This cemented this idea among the early Afrikaners the need to take and maintain control over the Union of South Africa and later the Republic of South Africa when they declared a Republic when the Afrikaan controlled government got into power.

I feel sorry for any group of people who are partially judged by past events that came about because of the actions of those that came before them. So your generation (and others before) were not responsible for those actions and largely do not condone them, but there's still this really unhealthy association. In Britain, sometimes there's still this stupid thing hanging around about German people because of WW2. Anyone who thinks that way is very close minded and it's really not worth paying too much attention! It's sad some people think this way and it's not the road to peace.

What's Africa? I stopped reading about that country after the settlers decided to bring a violent species of human over from there. And they've been causing nothing but trouble since.

Are they as bad as the ones in America who account for seven times more murders per capita than whites?

        • I wish I say no, but the violent crime in SA is way worse than the US. I think we have like 10 000 murders a year and one of the highest rates of rape in the world, right up there with conflict zones like Afghanistan and Columbia, and were considered one of the more safer countries in Africa, which tells you all you need to know

I do believe many people portray Africa as blacks not whites. Why they changed it to African American. If a white African tried to come and say "Im African American" they would probobly get laughed at. Even if they are technically correct. So I think to them at least you are probobly not white at all but a black guy that has ancestors enslaved in that country.

Sad, but true. The last thing American kids learn about Africa in school is that slaves were kidnapped from there. Then they tell us a little about the ferocious animals of the Amazon.

Yp, the whole divition thing is true- That's why SA has 3 Capitals Pretoria Cape Town and Bloemfontei, because the Afrikaner Voortrekkers couldn't decide which one they wanted to make the official capital,In a way I suppose were a lot like the Dutch Indonesians after ww2, an ethnic group that few know exist and who are losing a foothold in our own homeland

It doesn't help the fact that we have the likes of Afrikaner Weerstandsbeweging ruining it for the rest of the Afrikaners. I understand the importance of protecting and maintaining the Afrikaner culture but what the Afrikaner Weerstandsbeweging is doing is fucked up.
