What convinced you to play an instrument?

My mother was a pianist and a singer, so learning music was just a part of life. But my mom wanted us kids to learn something other than piano. At school I had the choice of trumpet, trombone, flute, or clarinet. Brass tickled too much so I went for a woodwind. At the time I was going through a phase of doing everything the opposite as my sister, and she played flute. So that left the clarinet. It suited me and I was good. I also got really lucky and found myself surrounded by some of the best musicians in the state. And I got extra credit if I allowed them to give me lessons...um, okay. It was fun and it enabled me to travel the world with my college symphony. And I didn't even study music, I just liked to play. And the director didn't mind, I made for good filler and never tried to compete for top spot. That was never what it was about.

  • I have an electric guitar. I tried to upgrade from Guitar Hero to a real guitar but it just didn't work out too well. I'll stick to Guitar Hero on expert.

  • My dad wanted me to be a rock star, so he enrolled me in piano lessons at age six and I took them every year until I was sixteen. I played beautifully, but was extremely introverted as a child and hated performing in front of an audience.

As a teenager, I plaid the flute & piccolo for five years and could also play the obo, clarinet, trumpet and french horn.

  • I used to play the viola. I was in love with orchestra and was obsessed with the beautiful sound that a violin/viola makes. I always wanted to make those wonderful sounds and thats what got me to play it. I really wanna learn how to play the guitar now (not electric).

I got dj hero and thought i was the shit at djing. Then i tried to dj at my school and I failed...literally.

I've been playing the clarinet for ages now. It feels like my whole life whereas it's only been half.

In 5th grade we had to attend this assembly where someone from our local music supplier company came and showed us the most common instruments and played them for us. I fell in love with the sound the clarinet made on that day and convinced my mom to let me rent one. Come high school I got one of my very own.

Music has a way of provoking emotion in me that nothing or no one else has ever been able to do. So I have stuck with it.

I started playing a violin when I was around 10 years old. I only liked it because I got time off school, my parents basically pushed me into it. Now I play (I say "play", I mainly just strum and improvise solos. It's relaxing, okay?) electric guitar, which I absolutely love. Music is probably the most important thing in my life at the moment.

My infant school decided everyone was going to learn to read music at the age of six. If you read music, you want to play an instrument.

My brother, sister and I all play woodwind or brass, and all play keyboard. When my dad bought a keyboard, there had to be a family timetable drawn up because all any of us wanted to do was play it. We were so obsessed, the timetable stuck around for three years.
