What constitutes a drinking/drug problem?

The easy answer is if you have to ask you probably have one. But I'm just curious for any other users opinions. My life doesn't suck terribly, but it's not great at all. I guess once it gets shitty enough I'd probably just off myself instead of going on a bender.

So why not just off yourself instead of becoming an addict?

  • When your life becomes about chasing that high. When all your responsibilities go out the window because you don't care about anything else. When you start making decisions that you normally wouldn't as a sober person; stealing, selling all your personal belongings, selling your body, etc. When it becomes the first and last thing you think of each day.

      • Very true. There are several different types of addicts. I know one that if I didn't know them personally I would never know that they were an addict. There are definitely 'high functioning' addicts in society. I was just using those as examples.

I'd say that you know you have a drug problem when you use on days that you told yourself that you wouldn't.

It's a problem when it's negatively affecting your life. Maybe you spend too much money or lose days from a job or your partner resents you. When it's no longer fun and you can't stop, you have a problem.

Alcoholism is a disease, right? So is drug addiction. So what you are saying that it's better to "off yourself" than get cured, right?
I doubt those with cancer or Parkinson's would agree with you, but hey, you go on and do it your way.

Fair enough, but it can be managed successfully, can it not?

Addicts are people too bro, they are probably at the point they delve deep into addiction trying to kill themselves because there life is depressing enough to were they need the frequent use. What normally constitutes the beginning of addiction is when someone tells thwmselves,no,not gonna do this anymore, then about a half a day to a day later they just do it again.
