What can you do when people believe something completely false about you?

Like, if there's a rumor or common belief about you that is completely false, but everyone seems to buy into. You are viewed very negatively because of it. Some know the truth, but not enough.

Help us keep this site organized and clean. Thanks!

Nothing. If people are dumb enough to believe one side of some BS then fuck'em. the ones who know the truth are all that really matters.

Show them proof that it's false, that's why I record all my phone calls, screen shot all my texts/online conversations & video everywhere I go that doesn't have security cameras. I store it all on a petabyte memory tower & a dozen other 20 terabyte hard drives.

Are you afraid someone is going to kill you or something?

I dated a girl who did that (minus videoing everywhere she went) but the real reason was to blackmail people as it turned out.

"Are you afraid someone is going to kill you or something?"

No. I just know someone is going to make a false accusation against me one day (like they did with my second brother) I piss to many people off not too due to me being to standoffish & non compromising.

"I dated a girl who did that (minus videoing everywhere she went) but the real reason was to blackmail people as it turned out."

Most of the videos are to show when & where I was at any given time (people aren't even in a lot of them), that way if someone says I did something on 'so and so date' at 'so and so place' I can prove it was a lie.

That will work as long as you can somehow convince the people of the dates and times of the videos. It's not that difficult at all to edit metadata or even superimpose a visual date and time on a video file.

The effort required to do that is minuscule compared to recording your entire life just in case you're questioned. Someone seeing your video might ask themselves how many know how to edit metadata versus how many record their entire lives just in case. They might decide the video is statistically more likely to be a fabrication or even that in a sense the application of Occam's razor calls for it.

I suspect that in most cases having a video couldn't do more harm than good, but it's ultimately dependent on the person you're trying to convince. For example, when murder investigators have only two suspects and ask them something like "where were you on the 9th of September in 2019" it's usually the person who more readily and easily offers data supportive of their innocence.

The guilty person will say, "I spent the night night-fishing. The sky was amazingly clear considering it had rained earlier. I caught very little but the appearance of the moon made it all worth it. It was in the waxing gibbous phase which I've always found more beautiful than a full moon. Here, read my diary entry all about it. Also, here is a receipt of the extra fishing supplies I bought just earlier that day."

The innocent one will say, "Fuck. I have no idea. That was almost two years ago. I might can guess better if you tell me what day of the week it was."

That's the normal response. Again, I suspect doing what you're doing will help you more often than not. That said, others might see it as a premeditated, fabricated alibi due to the seeming absurdity and outlandish behavior of videoing one's entire life. For some, the odds of fabrication will always seem more likely than the accused just happening to have sufficient paranoia of being accused ahead of time so as to record things for no other reason than clearing their name.

I video the dates on multiple different devices (phone/PC/TV/electric clock & not just my own) to show what date it is outside of the video file.

Luckily I've never care about my social presence or how i'm perceived by others, my happiness & wellbeing is all that matter to me and as long as I didn't do a crime I have very little (if anything) to worry about do to overwhelming contradicting evidence to said crime being on my side.

People used to talk about me behind my back at this one job, but I didn't care too much, because I thought they were a bunch of losers.

    • I'm not op, but what happens when those losers control your life? Like let's say you could be fired at *any* time because of them talking about you

It was a crappy job, but I got fired eventually anyway.

The way I see it, if people choose to believe something absurd about me without even hearing my side of it, or considering the source of where it came from (the only time I've ever known of any rumors about me, it always came from well known bullshitters), that is up to them. Who cares what they think?

Of course, maybe if it was something extremely serious it would be different, but so far I've only had to deal with ridiculous bullshit being said about me, that no one with a brain would believe.

make up somethin 10x worse about them

  • It depends. I'll either approach it rationally or play into it to the point of absurdity that the people I'm playing it into for realize how stupid it is.

If you don't have evidence you can present to prove them wrong, the best thing you can do is just wait for people to cool off about it or forget

For some reason there was this rumour about me that I am a nazi when I was in highschool, even though I'm lgbt and probably of jewish decent. I have no idea how it got started. I can only assume that it was because I am interested in the psychology of hitler. Anyways I am meeting a lot of these people again and it's pretty awkward but I think if you're just nice and honest it will eventually go away.
