What are your opinions of new yorkers?

I'll tell you my opinion from what I know, generally speaking, you can't generalize them too much because NY's a high populace of so many different kinds of people from all walks of life. That being said, like many stereotypes, carry a hint of truth which has been stretched out of proportion. New York is faster paced than many other parts of the US, everything on average gets done faster, hence the saying "New York minute". My observations can only carry so far due to my not living there and limited previous visits there. Things I've heard other people say about NY is the brash in-your-face straight-forward no sugar coating attitudes there. Other things I've heard is their superiority thinking they're better than the rest, and that many of them sneer down their noses at people from like the Midwest and South calling them ignorant rubes. These, like I said, are other people's opinions and not mine. I think New York may have the highest levels of education, but I'm sure there can still be some highly educated people found in Kansas city or Nashville. And many things in NY being a notch better in quality, NY does have the best pizza, best Italian food, best French and Greek food (outside of France and Greece), best delicatessens, but, the Midwest has the best BBQ, and New Orleans has the best Cajun food. I guess my point is New York has more of the better things, but it does not make them better in absolutely everything. NY is still the top of the line I'm sure, like the song says "If I can make it there, I can make it anywhere". The reason I'm writing all this is that I may be having a job offer there soon, but I don't know for sure yet. I'm just wondering, what are some of your thoughts on NY? Any truth in some of the things I've mentioned or heard from other people?

Help us keep this site organized and clean. Thanks!

17 million people and they have good Pizza . ok fine they have good pizza but they are backward people. most grew up on a city block and die on the city block without have left the city block. Can you imagine being a earthling and never have owned a car? How fucking third world is that?

I read somewhere that per capita New York has one of the lowest crime rates when compared to other cities.

The natives in the Long Island area have that recognizable NY accent, that's not heard anywhere else in the world, as far as I know.

New Yorkers are the best type of Americans. They swear correctly. Like, you could see a primordial dwarf on the NY subway arguing with a bouncer like "FUCK YOU!" and it'd be epic!

If you spend any amount of time there, you run the risk of becoming bored elsewhere. Everything is fast paced. It's a great confidence booster.

You should go. New Yorkers are rough around the edges and kind of pompous
but go anyway. Ultimately they are ok and yes, if you can start in NY with nothing and make it, you can make it anywhere!!

Im just a small town girl, but I went to NY to get capital for a business I own. I was scared shitless but if I can do it anyone can!!! Yay NY

    • Good job Nikki 😊 I think I could do it too, I'll try anyway.
I didn't think the reputation of New Yorkers being pompous applied to all of them. Isn't New York one place, due to it being such a huge melting pot, that no matter what kind of person you are, you can always find someone else like you? More variety of people than anywhere else? Like if you're someone who's "different" in a smaller city or town, you'd stand out and no one there would know anyone else like you, but in New York, you got every type of human being under the sun? I don't know for sure on that, but I guess that since it's so harried and fast paced, the idling, slower moving types of people would have trouble finding other people around like them. But I'm sure there are still some there like that, perhaps they came for the variety and diversity, but hate the hectic competitiveness. Long story short, I guess it's just like anywhere or anything else in life, gotta take the bad with the good.

By pompous I mean they think their city is the center of the universe. Yes there are all types and some very good people but they all are cliquish and stick together.

Anyway its a great city. Just don't take their shit and you'll do fine. πŸ˜‚

        • I'll deal with the shit, and because it's New York, I'm not expecting to not run into people everyday who will try to give me shit. There are probably a lot of very colorful, interesting characters there too. New York is one place I'm sure where there is never a dull moment. But I've been interested in how fascinating and exciting it can be there too. And I'm sure there are some of the best restaurants in the world. I have heard New Yorkers before complain about how crappy food tastes in other parts of the US, when they're used to New York cuisine. My mom lives in South Florida, and when I was there, I met some New Yorkers who were saying how shitty the food at the restaurants are in Florida are in comparison to NY.

Well enjoy the city. Thats kind of what I meant. New Yorkers think all their stuff is the best. They eat the same food as the rest of the country althought personally I prefer eating fresh from the farm food 😊

I worked at the New York Stock Exchange for two years from 1999 to 2001 architecting the floor system that allows dark pool trading to run. There is extreme pressure in the Securities industry. The minute you are not the best, you are fired. There is no time to compare yourself to anybody; full throttle from the minute you get off the subway.

    • Yes, I've heard the NY stock exchange is a dog eat dog pandemonium, you can't be any less than the best, and you can't afford to lose your concentration for even a fraction of a second.

        • I wouldn't survive half a minute there. My possibility of going to New York would be a job in the music industry, I'm a piano player. I'm still not sure I'll even be going there yet.

          • You need to be good, aggressive, have intensity, and passion for what you do to make it in NY. I’m sure you know Juilliard, the premier music school, is in NYC. The overall acceptance rate is just over 7% of all applicants. People there are generally good hard working people, but it’s a competitive town - everyone wants the best, so you have to be the best. That includes the traits I mentioned.

it's not just for music, but more generally 'performing arts'. Lots of award winning actors and actresses have attended Juilliard.

Lots of piano players perform at bars and restaurants in the theater district on Broadway. The tips are good. You should drop in, listen, work on your repertoire, and decide if you want to audition.

I checked the Lorenz curve, and yes I squeeked into the 2%. I would never spend my savings on first class air fare, nor would I ever drive an obscenely priced German car. If you were as intelligent as me, you would start flying under the radar. Go talk to someone else.
