Wha's the most extravagant thing you've obtained and are you happy?

What is an extravagant item you've wanted, then got, and what happened afterward?

Please comment on how your feelings evolved from wanting to having and beyond. Did you just want something else right after? Do you still cherish the item or is it long gone?

Extravagant to YOU, which might or might not be extravagant to others. All that matters is how YOU felt about it.

  • A puppy! My parents bought me a very cute puppy as a present for getting good grades in school when I was 9. They put it into a paper bag, carried it to me and said, "Look what we've bought you on the way home!" Then they gently toppled the bag and the puppy came out! I was so thrilled!

I'm now 21 and I still remember the scene so well. I don't think I will forget it when I'm 81! This is one of the best things that happened to me so far. Good poll by the way :D

That is officially the sweetest thing I've heard in a very long time. Stuff like this makes me really happy.

  • A couple of years ago I bought an exotic italian sports saloon. It was a very good year and I bought a couple of homes, which were expensive but seemed sensible and not extravagant, and I got this car as a treat.

The thrill was short-lived. The gearbox was an awful mess, almost giving me whiplash in city driving, and it is forever in the shop for some little thing. The switches and controls were maddening after a very short time. I was repeatedly stopped by the police just so they could look at the car and flirt with me. I was afraid to park it anywhere for fear it would be vandalized (the first week someone scratched a door). And my father and brother convinced me that the car would make me a target for kidnapping.

Now I rarely drive it and don't even keep it at my house. I alternate between a Prius I hate and a ghastly ugly BMW. I would like to get rid of all three but nothing new is appealing.

a better lifestyle, where im living abroad in 90% sunshine and working in a zoo, a great alternative to a career in a dark office in the miserable rain.

3 yards of White Chinese Silk. It was $30 a yard. My best friend turned it into a beautiful gown for my wedding (I paid her for labor as well) with enough fabric left over to use as an alter cloth. I love my friends.

    My first firearm: a revolver (.357 / .38 special)

I don't really *need* it. But I wanted it. And I'm still glad I have it. Which reminds me I need to clean it.

  • An ipod touch. I didn't really want it. My parents just got me one because my sister asked for one too. It made me happy though and I still love it.

I guess something that I did ask for is my computer. I've loved it for a long time (6 years) and now it's old and slow.

Now I want a new computer and some headphones. Material items don't really make me euphoric or anything, but they're nice and convenient. I don't know what would.

A piano. It was just a low-end upright, but I had always wanted one. I couldn't even fit it in my bedroom because the hallway was too narrow to turn it through my doorway. Even with the damper pedal it was too loud to play most of the time, and maintenance was a nightmare. A massive disappointment.

I spent three month's salary on the most beautiful wristwatch I've ever seen. It was second-hand but it was in good nick. I was so scared of scratching it or bumping it that I was constantly conscious of it on my arm. It was a bit like where your fingernail is hanging off and you know it'll mean pain just putting your hand in your pocket.

A chap at work, who is also a watch enthusiast, pleaded on a daily basis for me to sell it to him. Eventually, I realised it was a millstone round my neck and I sold it for the same price I bought it for, with the intention of buying a cheaper watch.

That was three years ago and my inability to find anything I like quite as much has led to me not wearing a wristwatch at all for those three years. In effect, the most beautiful watch ruined all other watches for me.

In the time I've been away from IIN, I got over the wristwatch thing and I wear one again. Probably the cheapest one I've ever owned, but I like it even if my friends say it's gay.

  • A horse named Odis. When I first got to ride him I felt like I was king of the world and make a complete fool out of myself.

    Odis died though :(
