We're born in the wrong generation

Is it normal to wish you had been born several decades before you actually were? Todays society idolizes these imbeciles from The Jersey Shore and the Kardashians. I mean these are uneducated moronic and to put it rather nicely, idiotic intellectually retarded people. They are dumbing down the kings English. They are brainwashing our youth past stupidity. I can't help but think one hundred years from now, there will be no books or philosophers with cultural sentiment. This country is despicable.

Several decades ago society was much more sexist and racist than it is now. I'll take a little crap reality TV (all you have to do is not watch it and it goes away) in exchange for a more tolerant society :)

As for language, it always has evolved and always will. The purpose of language is to facilitate communication as effectively as possible. You can look at it as dumbing down, or you can look at it as the normal process of evolving language.

Remember that the majority of people also don't like those aspects of today's society that you hate. You're not alone :) Some people idolise those people who can contribute nothing, but most of them are just kids who'll hopefully grow out of it :P

God dammit, dom - you're great. Keep it up.

P.S. I'd also like to add that idiots have existed in every era, and always will.

        Can I have a flutter high-five? :D

If anything, I'd say the proportion of idiots in today's society is pretty low versus 50 years ago. If you've not heard of it, you should look up the Flynn effect (it relies on IQ, which I know is imperfect, but still it's pretty cool stuff). It shows that, for whatever reason, the number of idiots is dropping, which we should all celebrate with much balloons and stuff.

EDIT: I used "stuff" twice in one comment. MUST... IMPROVE... VOCABULARY...

The notification system is seriously messed up. I keep having to come back to comments I found interesting to check if there was a response.

I've heard of the Flynn effect, though I'd always assumed that had more to do with increased and improved educational standards. I don't think half a century is nearly enough time for there to be a significant evolutionary shift, so I'd wager a guess that it's more like idiots are just more functional these days. Which isn't a terrible thing either, I suppose.

    Ironic, isn't it?
All those people who use nerd as an insult, without those programming "nerds", they wouldn't be able make overemootional blogs on Facebook, without those "nerds" that love math, they wouldn't have a damn house to live in. Nobody would know how to make one. Without those biology "nerds", vaccines wouldn't exist. Without "nerds", nobody would know a thing about anything. This whole anti education thing in this generation is stupid, without education, we'd still be running around beheading people for sorcery and would still have a jury system based on divine intervention. We'd still be running around, not knowing what hell is going on, because there's nobody to prove anything right or wrong, nobody to tell you why 2+2=4 and not 5. Just like the dark ages.

Last year, I had to watch a movie version of Frankenstein (with the rest of the class), and there was one specific event I remember while watching it. There was a scene where Frankenstein is developing his creation, and an aquaintance of mine says, "Wow that guy has no life.", and I remember just being completely disgusted by this statement. As in just like "What the fuck? How is the pursuit of knowledge seen as bad?" I didn't care about the actual movie, I was just at a total lack of understanding. Didn't say anything though, I really didn't want to be annoyed by the innevitable negative attention I'd get later from others. I mean, how do people seriously not understand how means? Without it were nothing more than animals, relying on pure instinct and emotions.

i think people that couldn't read or do math were building houses for centuries out of necessity. not to say people would be able to do it now.

True, you can build, say, a small shack without a whole lot of math involved. But to build any sort of moderatly complex structure, you're going to need to build accordingly, so that the roof doesn't come crashing down, the walls won't cave in etc.

A friend asked me this the other day. He said with a smug smile, "Hey serpent, what would you do if you had to rough it without AC?"

    Wanna know what I said?

I told him, "Well John if I had lived in the 1700s or Grecian days, I would never have known any better therefore I would have been pretty satisfied with Life. After all, you can't abhor something when you don't even realize there is something missing"

I guess what I'm trying to say is that although women and other groups have had it rough in the past, I don't think they would have hated their own day simply because they never knew there was anything better out there just as -we- don't know of any better life than the one Present.

      Or something like that.

    Hiya,

I try not to pay attention to what I don't care about, and stick with what I know I like.

This probably makes me an intensely boring person to some people, but someone who's into the same things will think I’m great.

It might be harder to find the type of things you do like, and you might end up having to pay a bit more to get it, but you won't be the only one who likes it

        Hiya,

I know you weren't. It's pointless trying to change their minds because they won't appreciate it.

I'm just glad I know “popular” (now) doesn't always mean “good”.

If things are popular it makes them easier to find -- but that also means they're easier to get rid of, too. I can't think of anyone my age who'd want my cds, but I’d have to be dying to pass them on.

    I actually liked the 70's.
But since people were dieing for not wearing seat belts (and because many cars didn't even fit them in the back at least) Plus people riding motorbikes usually didn't wear helmets! And .. actually there's a billion examples of safety issues, hmm we also had an outside asbestos walled toilet (an inside your home toilet seemed strange actually, in some regard it still does to me)

With the advances in science and technology, medicine and education, I'm pretty sure if I went back in time I'd be more frustrated at the ignorance and sexism and racism and even education that was taught with hard discipline. I mean what what you do if you heard the teacher belted your son or daughter with a strap? Because in the past that was normal and attending school was mandatory for children. It was not uncommon to be wacked across the knuckles for having a spelling mistake!

On top of this you had religion in the law! In the school! And it was generally seen as normal to attend church and belong to one conjugation. I mean just this alone is enough to make someone sick to the bone. Glad that rubbish now doesn't exist in school etc.

The only option for a better world is the future. As is the main intention of society development, to make things better. Personally I'd like to go to where weekly work hours are swapped. We work for 2 days and enjoy 5 away from work, with the same pay.

I also want to space travel and visit other planets and galaxies. Oh well, we are obviously still in the industry era.

Im not sure about 100 years ago but Id rather much wish I was born in the 1970's where there isn't much pressure about having to dress a certain way since todays teens really care about how they dress and think they have to dress preppy to fit in. I mean when was the last time you saw a teen wear some normal not expensive looking clothes say from Wal-Mart? Not one. I myself have to shop at those preppy places or else I won't fit in with the crowd.sigh..Todays teens are being brainwashed by the media thats for sure.

I would say there is a good and bad to this this generation. I will not deny how pathetic and stupid it is that reality shows, like you described, are taking over, and that everyone idolizes these people as thought they have done something worthy. It kind of pisses me off because you have so many people with so much talent that never get discovered, but an obnoxious personality seems to be enough to get you famous now days (reality TV shit!)

However, the technology of this generation is amazing! I can't believe I ever went without having an ipod or the advantages of youtube. So I wouldn't say I rather be in in a different generation. I guess there is an up and down to everything.

Uhh... I don't pay attention to any of that crap. I just do what I want to do with my life and not care one bit of what stars are really doing. Unless, I like that certain celeb enough to just see every once and a blue moon what they have done with their life besides movies or shows and which I can't really say right now.

So personally I ignore the part of the society I don't really care about. Just live life. :)

Oh, c'mon. The world has always been littered with assholes. I mean, yeah, popular media is a cultural regression if you compare it to the Renaissance. When this woman I know was my age, 1930, NYC had a 9 o' clock curfew. I was like gtfo!! If you think that's a stupid rule, like I did, there are many things you'll never really know about a society unless you lived thee at the time.
