We need to stop cool names for serial killers

Ever notice serial killers get the coolest names? Like the night stalker, jack the ripper, and BTK. Wouldnt it make more sense to give them a stupid name? Like name one "the stinky booty bandit", "the inbred dufus", "mr micropeen", or even "dr limp dick". This will discourage young people from being serial killers. They will not be able to have a cool name.

I feel the concern lies in the glorification, and the name simply has little to no effect on the glorification.

If you were to name the killer something dumb and stupid, it may make people not take the killer and the victims seriously. I mean, imagine how that conversation would go:
[Other] Wow, I heard you were attacked last week; even hospitalized! Are you okay?

[Victim] Yeah, it was real traumatizing though...

[Other] Did they find out who did it?

[Victim] They think it might be the Stupid Shitty Butthead.

[Other] LOL, that's so funny. You've got to be joking!

    [Victim] *feels invalidated*

So, I feel a better way to make serial killers un-glorified is to just talk about how bad and terrible the killers are.

Alas, there will always be someone that glorifies killers. It's inevitable. But there are ways that we can eliminate some of that. [See paragraph above]

      Chap. That's a good point.
I've never thought about it that way before.

Most serial killers are simply extreme sexual sadists with an outright need to do what they do. They understand they are risking their lives to do this stuff. That's how bad they want to. They might find getting a name cool but they honestly don't give a damn about any of that. Their motivation for taking lives is the feeling of taking lives.

They're far more twisted than most are capable of truly understanding. It's common that they spontaneously orgasm at the sight of a life draining by their doing, without requiring direct physical stimulation. It's dark stuff. They simply love killing.

  • Being a serial killer takes more than a desire for a cool name

It's one thing to think in your head how you could do such and such like it's no big deal

It's another to seriously consider it

Most of the famous ones I've read about are essentially acting out a network of mental deficits, such as megalomania, narcissism, negative aspects of psychosocial/moral development such as a lack of trust in the world around them and constructing parameters that allows them to behave in ways that facilitate said murders, PTSD, OCD, any form of autism, bipolarism, dissociative disorders, and others I'm sure

Now some do commit murders for the fame, but statistically they're like less than ten out of 100 I would wager

Most people without psychological complexes, those networks I just talked about, will rationalize murder as an occasional fun idea but not worth the consequences, which is where moral development comes into play

Complexes are a little tricky to develop, which is a good thing because as a whole our species is well constructed, but also reveals the evil we're capable of.

So overall not many people will actually become murderers, even fewer for the pure fame of it. If prison and everything else isn't enough of a deterrent, not having a cool name or your whole story blasted on the news won't do much to stop anyone

And, by the way, I think part of the reason they get cool names is from the media sensationalizing the coverage to get people interested and informed. You know, living near where Dahmer or Manson operated, I would want to find out quick, accurate information

Well, I think they shouldn't be glorified in the way they sometimes are. I have never understood how some people develop romantic crushes on serial killers or idolize them and want to commit copycat killings.

I've had this thought before, myself. Serial killers should not get cool names. They should get humiliating names. And btk did choose his name. He said it stands for bind, torture, kill.

    I LOVE this idea.

I think the names come from the fact that fiction and reality have become mixed somewhat. The jump from fantasy/horror to crime is not that large, and 'cool' names create an aura of legend about these individuals.

You think the NAMES are the problem? It's the need to stop the glorification, not names.

Not only that, but the "stupid" names you gave them are actually funny, so funny that I would literally name some serial killers that.

OP no one is a serial killer for a cool name. Also a lot of killers are real people and have real names. If Jack Hamilton kills people, his name will be well known. If you think Jack is a cool name, tell Jacks mom.

Just stop glorifying it all together. Never mention or acknowledge the killer at all. Example: another person was attacked today in the XXX neighborhood. They died shortly after arriving at the hospital. Be on the look out for a thin tall green female.
In other words never mention by made up name, real name, or put a face to the crime. At least not until after convicted. This accomplishes two things, stops the glorification, and prevents ruining somebody's life that is a suspect but not the actual criminal.
For our English lads out there is it still true that English media can not mention the person's real name or show a picture of a person that is just a suspect or has not been convicted?
I've seen many cases where the media blast a person's name, face, job, everything about them and then it's a false aligation but the person's life as they knew it was destroyed especially if they're a teacher, police, political figure, high profile person.
Name them anything you want just stop the media frenzy from blowing it in to a ratings war for them and their profit margin.

Serial killers have existed since the beginnings of the human race. Long before “nicknames” lol. And while there are outliers in any group it wouldn’t do a thing, and here’s why.

A serial killer in the classical sense is referring to “serial sexual homicide“ the vast majority of the time. The fbi is on record stating this. They are in large part created through the unnatural fusion of the sex and aggression drives. This along with a focus on need for control.

They often go to great lengths to cover everything they do completely, and several have even tried to sue authors for calling them those “cool” names you mention. Some enjoy attention because it helps them relive the crimes in retrospect, that’s the true motivation for that aspect. Killing is actually secondary as far as motive for the majority, it’s based on control with a very strong sexual element. Bundy killed women because he was heterosexual. Gacy killed males because he was homosexual.

They are statistically extremely rare (and getting rarer if you believe the stats) in comparison to mass shooters (who do act out for attention often) and other killers.

In short, a lot of odd things have to go wrong for one to come into existence. And it has little to do with this basic and stupid notion of nicknames or fame. They may enjoy the monikers they are given afterwards, but they would’ve been serial killers regardless.

Read a damn book instead of being a social media dumbass.

        • The problem here is of course you agree with your own post

That'd be like if I ended every comment with "what I said is incredibly valid and should be considered with utmost relevance"

When really it's all about if your position is agreeable to the masses, which lends much more credence than someone agreeing with themself
