Was this a racial slur? if so, then who were they talking about?

I'm visiting my wife's family here in New York City. Yesterday, while my wife and I were having lunch with some old friends of hers, someone made a remark about the "yoms". I am a 30 year old white male from central Florida and I have never heard of anyone called a "yom". Afterwards I asked my wife and she said to not be so disgusting. I gather that it is normal to use this slur up here. Can anyone tell me what a "yom" refers to? Is it a normal slur?

Pommy or pom is a derogatory Australian term for English people

          ah thank you.
pssht that seems kind of self-loathing since most of them came from England anyway, right?

I never thought of that! Of course you're right, most white Australians had English/Scottish/Welsh/Irish background - like most I'm a mixture of all those plus some Australian Aboriginal.

That's changed a lot over my lifetime (I'm 68) and I do remember some English migrants in particular were known as "whingeing Poms" because they were enticed out here on false pretences about housing, working conditions and so on. In my experience only the English complained, the others, esp the Scots, were more inclined to shut up and get on with it.

I would assume it refers to Jewsih Yom Kippur? But, its Haunnukah right now...
I was at a meeting where a man nonchalantly asked an Asian woman " so, what are you, like a Jap or something?"
Lol he had no clue that was an offensive term...the looks in the room were priceless.

Yeah, I actually thought yom as short for "yarmulke" (which I've heard pronounced like "yom-ika") the hat they wear. I've heard Jews called bagels as sort of a joke but still a slur, lol.

I agree with the others that it could be something Jewish related. Florida is associated with having a lot of Jewish retirees.
