Verbally abusive parents?

Whenever my dad comes home, he is always in a pissed off mood. I think it is because of work or something, but he shouldn't come home and yell at us. I have 4 sisters and 2 brothers and I am the second oldest in the family.
I don't know if this is verbal abuse since we are all so used to his constant yelling. When we (us kids) feel like we have done something great, my parents always find things to criticize us on. I find it so annoying. When i go to my boyfriends house, i see house his parents love him so much, and they show it! They are always so proud of him! I gave up talking to my parents about my accomplishments because they will just find something to criticize me about. I think my family needs help.

  • Well, abusive parents like this do a complete 180 when company's over, so your boyfriend might have it rough too.

dad sounds burnt out from work, or some other trouble. mom is probably at her wits end too. everyone needs a support system around them. unfortunately for you, being one of the oldest, you are probably the support system for the younger ones.

ollieo is right, seek some help. good luck kid

  • That is pretty sad - sounds like they are stuck in a very negative rut and just bring everyone else down. And this is affecting their children who need (crave) love, support and encouragement.

Is there someone you can talk to, a teacher, clergy, youth counsellor; about how this is affecting you, and maybe how to get the family together to address this problem?

At least get some support for yourself - people who will recognize and encourage you - if you can not get anywhere with these parents.
