Vacationless and hating it

I just realized yesterday that I have not been on a vacation down south since 1994. I live in Canada, so as most of you know, we don't exactly get tropical weather around here! It makes me sad to think the only time I was down south is when I was a kid. It also pisses me off when I hear people talking about their annual vacations down south. I guess I'm just jealous. I would love to go down there sometime, but with the shitty economy, it's just not possible for me, and it sucks big time. We have to work our asses off to pay bills and shit, and I don't get any vacation time at work for a while. Is it normal for me to feel I am well-overdue for a vacation and to be jealous of the people who always go every year? I mean I don't even wanna hear them talk about it! It's that bad.

What province do you live in?
Me: I'm in B.C. and I love it here. The winters are so mild.

I lived in Edmonton for 3 years. It's an unpleasant city, I can't think of many things I actually enjoyed about. It's too bad that so many people have to go there to find employment.

I've been to NB; twice; on vacation. I liked it - it's so charming. It reminded me a lot of BC (minus the mountains). I liked it more than PEI and NS.

Where I live in BC, we only had (last winter) a little bit of snow for one week, and that was it. I'm not a fan of snow. The herb here is great too.

Oh yes, you guys have some awesome herb! :) Yeah I really like NB too... and BC. And you're right, it's too bad so many of us have to go to Alberta to find employment - and then get ripped off by scuzzy landlords who jack up the rent to something crazy like $1500 for a bachelor appartment that's not suitable for a sewer rat!! I don't miss my old shithole of an apartment... not one bit! I was only an hour and a half away from Edmonton. Crazy stuff happened all the time, like murders and breakins, etc. I'm glad to be back in NB :)

Dude swap lives with me. I've been wanting to go to Canada my entire life. I hate Texas.

Haha, well I love Canada, and I would never want to move out of this country. I would, however, love to visit Texas sometime. I've been to Florida, but never Texas :(

  • I think it is unfair to begrudge other people the vacation you want and yet have not been able to organize for 24 years. These just sound like poor excuses from which you will never learn. Open a savings account. Put a little away each pay. Or do nothing and a year or two will go by anyway, only instead of going away yourself, you will be whiney about others "good fortunes."

Thanks, Ollieo. I really didn't mean to sound like a hateful bitch. I guess it really got to me one night that I have not been down south since I was 11 years old! It's crazy. And yes, I am envious of other people who get to go away EVERY year. I shouldn't say I hate hearing their stories... I love the fact they are enjoying their lives... it just builds on me. I tend to bottle things up inside, and then they all kind of explode at once, and it's usually in the form of a rant, lol. So I really hope you don't think I'm a selfish bitch. We have been saving money, though lately it's been coming down to: do we fixup the house, fix up the vehicles, or go on a vacation? The logical thing right now is to fix our house and vehicles. We COULD take a vacation, but it would put us farther in debt, and that would only raise our stress levels even more. I am really hoping to get down south before I turn 30... though time is running short! I also really want to visit Newfoundland in Canada (I am from Canada and LOVE this country). I also want to travel overseas. If only I could win the lottery... oh the possibilities!!!

you are normal. everyone needs time off, and a little extra cash to enjoy it.

recessions cycle around every 10 years, so things aren't going to stay this way forever. you must be too young to remember how bad it was in the 80s. this one is almost as bad.

Really? I really, really hope so!!!!!!! I was a kid in the 80s, so I really don't remember when times were tough then, though people have since told me about it. Let's pray for good times ahead for all of us! :)

recession or depression, every 10 years. it's a cycle that never ends.

also, in our 20s and 30s, when we are building our lives, is when we are broke.

hang in there. things will change, they always do.

That's normal. I'm sorry you can't afford a trip, hopefully you'll be able to come when finances permit.

Thanks, BrightEyes! Technically we could probably go on a vacation, but it would put us farther into debt, and that would not make any sense at all. Also getting time off work is a problem for us. But maybe in a few years, we will FINALLY be able to go down south, lol.
