User writing styles

Ok, so there was a post recently that piqued my interest and gave me an idea: How do you perceive other users' writing style on here?

You can talk about the subject matter they usually write about, the way they structure their sentences, the vernacular or diction they use, what types of posts they generally comment on, the types of posts they generally create, the way they name their titles on posts, their persona they use, if they have any kind of special ticks or grammar cues that tend to give them away, you can even talk about their general personalities if you'd like.

Is it normal that I'd like you to describe other users' writing styles on this site?

Sentence structure, spellings and misspellings, grammar, capitalisation, frequency and type of emoticons, and content are very distinctive features of the style of a lot of people on IIN.

I particularly notice people who's styles are very different to mine. No capitals at the start of some sentences (Holzman_67), lots of ellipsis (TheGhostOfReason), no line of space between paragraphs (thegypsysailor), long posts and paragraphs (ItDuz - although I sometimes to this too). I think of these features of text in the same way I think of features of accents in spoken word. Other people here are have distinctions that appear more subtle to me (especially when they're very similar to mine: thisissomuchfun, bananaface, dappled, howaminotmyself, charli.m and a lot more), and other people have writing styles I really can't operationalise the features of at all.

People like flutterhigh had a very distinctive way of writing because of the content of his posts. Not the subject matter so much as an err of wit, smugness, self-awareness and mischief that followed him around. dirtybirdy has a very distinctive personality too, as does Bugsforbreakfast. A lot of people here do, but those are the most immediate examples for me.

If you ever want to identify me: I use a lot of brackets, semi-colons and asterisks to indicate emphasis. I almost always use an "-ise" ending instead of an "-ize" ending in words like "realise" and "Anglicise". I usually write out numbers in full (as in "ten", rather than "10") unless I'm doing actual maths or it would take a very long time. And a surprisingly large number of my posts finish with the tongue emoticon :P

  • I think there are more technical givaways, beyond subject matter. Punctuation, grammar, vocabulary, and sentence structure to name a few.

Use of passive verbs is another...like I just did. It's not wrong, and only frowned upon in formal writing, which some here like to attempt.

The rambling posts without any punctuation or paragraphs is another, and easily identified.

Of course, differences among cultures: American English, as opposed to Oceana or Brittish for example, can give clues. Persons who are really sharp can discern Brittish from Scottish or Welsh, Australian from New Zealand, or Texan from Midwestern.

I muchlike such. My translation make bad. Problems with feminine freind at university sad make. Mine ejaculation of bitter verbiage hard to digest. Enormous red sores of abundance appear all along engorged shaft of friendship. Peterr say "Just suck it." No help. Confusion. I cry. Please help.

I have been here for a while and I've met a ton of characters so I'm just going to try to remember (trust me, I feel like a freak doing this but idk if that makes me weird or whatever...). I'll start with the guys that I find in the chatroom most of the time - True(white nationalist), thisissomuchfun (amazing person), Aliceee93 (always positive, like always), EccentricWeird (...), Dot123, lulz, omglula, Undercovercarrot, RapidlyRotatingPanda, charli.m, ilovesexytime, Acerbic (loves body art), chewy, itDuz, howaminotmyself...
These guys usually comment a lot but since they are that many people I can only write a few - RoseIsabella, shuggy-chan, dirtybirdy ( :D), kelili, CounterfeitCircus, bananaface, keddersprincess, TheGhostofreason, Hamid, robbie, handsignals, thegypsysailor, Holzman, Acumen, gummy, Anime7...

    well subject matter is easiest

    robbieforgotpw talks toilet humour
Ioncecamewaytoohard talks about blowing a load

hmm other than that I don't really pick up on idiosyncrasies within writing. Maybe I lack perception in that regard. I'm much better at finding character in voice conversation.

Well I know Sweet_Brown calls people "Honey, baby or child" or any other old people names... She seems to have an obsession with fire and a love for "cold pop." Just look at her profile description...

My writing style is a mix. There's time when I'm a silly little gummy bear, or a bit of a troll. Then I can be sarcastic and I answer redundant posts with sarcastic comments that somehow relates and get good feedback. But yeah... My style really isn't set in stone.

There is a user on here, whom I admittedly have a crush on and I am able to easily recognise her writing. She has such a unique way with words and it is a distinctive style. I'm not sure if it is my feelings towards her that makes it easier for me to recognise the style.

Are you the one who recently posted something about not wanting to reveal your feelings to your crush?

Since this is IIN how can you be certain that she isn't really a he?

I find this really funny, because reading the stories in this site have influenced my writing style a lot. And I guess that this affects everyone as well, even if it is just a little.

I don't recognize any users, but I do see certain patterns. For example, I really appreciate when the poster actually wraps up the whole story into one final sentence or question. At the same moment, I also like when stories have a good introduction and when the issue is addressed correctly.

No one ever talks about me. I guess i'm not distinctive enough lol.

  • I like to see people be versatile. For example, they could one moment be involved in a deep thinking conversation and the next moment be dishing out funny quips. It makes them very interesting.

I myself happen to like using emoticons :P and lots of ellipses to make me seem...thoughtful...or like stevie from Malcolm in the Middle haha your choice. I write as I think/speak so oftentimes I am not gramatically correct but whatevsauce. This isn't really on topic...meh it's related, I suppose.

Honestly there isn't really much of a writing style. I mean yes, subject matter, you can pick up on like Holzman said. But finding out the way someone writes I don't really see since online everyone types and thus has the same writing style. If we each had to write our things in our own hands then yes I think I could pick up on that, but since we don't I can't. Although I'm not saying that it is not possible to, I'm just saying that I can't.

What about those who try to write in a manner others can understand and those who only seem to post for their own amusement, because their posts are almost totally illiterate? Wouldn't you consider that a style of writing?
There are those who only post sex related quips and those who sincerely try to give an honest, intelligent opinion.
There are those who contribute, those who criticize and those who just want attention, without helping or hurting at all.
I would consider all these to be particular styles of writing, no matter the content.
Not trying to be critical, but only pointing out another view of the many different styles, I've seen.

But wouldn't that be subject matter though? I mean like shuggy usually (not always) talks about pedophilia, isn't that subject matter as opposed to writing style? I get what you're saying but I feel like writing style is a sort of thing that is I don't know how to describe it. But it's something personal, like the picture that the OP put up, that's somebody's way of communication. That's their own personal way. Subject matter isn't really a personal style of expression it's just what somebody talks about.
