Upset over last name change with marriage

Is it normal to be upset over having to change your last name when you get married? I have been married for a month and I still get terrified when I think of changing my last name. I love my husband more than anything but his family hates me because I am a different religion.

It's normal 35

    • Unless the couple is religious it shouldn't matter. My husband and I were raised different religions but we are agnostic/atheist so it doesn't matter at all. Plus, a lot of people could care less if their inlaws like them or not, as long as their significant other loves them.

You don't have to change it at all. If you don't want to change it, don't.

    You could hyphenate.

I just got engaged and I HATE my fiance's last name, but I can't see us with different last names. He won't take mine though :(

If his name is weird or sounds weird with your name, don't change it. I don't think it's such a big deal. I'm probably keeping my name when I get married.

Chances are I won't change my name if I ever get married. My name is very special to me because of its meaning.

If someone comes along whose last name will make my name even more special, I might not be able to say no.

Like others have said, you are not legally obligated to change your name.

Personally, I don't want to get married, but I DO want to change my name to my partner's name. Which I can do, provided I end up with a partner that doesn't think that's too weird :-S

I wonder if a woman ever married a man JUST to get his name...

I didn't change mine officially but I use his name anyway except when I file taxes, then I have to use my legal name.

You don't have to. My mum didn't take on my dad's surname. It's even more normal nowadays not to.

If I get married, I would never wish for any poor girl to have my awkward surname forced upon her...

It's normal. You don't have to change it if you don't want to or like Justsomejerk said, you can get them hyphenated.

I feel the same because I have a unique last name, and my bf has a very generic last name. Like the kind you see in examples on credit card aplications.
