Unnecessary awkwardness

There's a girl who works as a cleaning lady in my dorm, she's 3 years younger than me. And we were chatting occasionally for a couple days so today after she got off work I asked her out.

I got rejected, which is fine rejection doesn't bother me, what was strange was the huge awkwardness that accompanied it.

She said no. I said that's fine. She said I only date certain people, I don't date, I haven't since high school. I'm like that's fine, she says plus I don't like going out in the sun I get all hot and sweaty and then she told me a story about how one of her high school teachers accused her of not bathing because of how she gets hot and sweaty.

At this point things just seemed really awkward for me. She said I started talking to you because I wanted a friend in the dorm, not a boyfriend, again I'm like OK that's fine, I smile, laugh and leave.

Is this much awkwardness normal?
