Twitching in my sleep

Sometimes when I'm sleeping, I'll be dreaming, and in the dream I'm falling. When I fall, it usually results in me waking up from twitching really hard in bed. Almost like I'm jumping up while laying down. Anyone know what I'm talking about? This doesn't happen often, but it did last night, and it was enough to wake my husband up and ask if I was okay. Is it normal to get these massive dream twitches?

Yes, this is normal. It happens to me, and I've seen it happen to others. It usually happens when I'm just starting to fall asleep.

Yeah that's when it normally happens to me. My mom says it happens to my dad a lot too. Such a weird feeling sometimes!

i think this happens because your mind has convinced you that it is real and when you fall your natural reaction is to try and protect your self so when you twitch is your body getting ready for the impact of the fall...

i read up on this, basically what it means, is your brain has automatic functions that occur, that help the body stay alive IE: survival instincts, when you are slipping into sleep, your body almost things that you are dying...idk why, but i read up on this, the jerking is your body trying to wake you up because your breathing is too slow etc.

Happens to both me and my dad all the time. My dad's has gotten worse with age. He'll be lying half-asleep on an armchair or something and I'll physically see his body twitch weirdly every few minutes or so. It looks kind of funny, lol. It most often happens to me when I'm drifting off into sleep; I'll wake up with a jolt because I feel as though I just tripped and fell off a cliff. So yeah, perfectly normal.
