Trouble waking up from sleep and/or bad dreams.

My issue doesn't occur on a daily basis; however, it does happen occasionally. Sometimes I find myself struggling to wake up from being asleep. My mind is wide awake, but my body is unresponsive. There's been times when I realize I'm having a bad dream, yet I can't wake myself up to get outta the nightmare. What's even worse, is that the nightmare continues after I've realized the fact that I'm dreaming. It troubles me because I wake up in shock; feeling as though I have no control over myself. I would appreciate any help, please.

And lastly, is this normal?

It's known as sleep paralysis. It's happened to me before, and it's only when I'm having a bad dream.

It usually happens in one of two ways for me:

    1) I'm having a bad dream, and I realize I'm having a bad dream, but I can't wake myself up from it. This can be referred to as lucid dreaming, where you become aware in your dream that you are actually having a dream.

    2) I wake up from a bad dream, and I realize I'm lying in bed, but I can't move. This is referred to as sleep paralysis. It often lasts anywhere from 2 to 10 seconds. I find myself "struggling" to move my body but I can't, and when I finally do, I end up "jerking" myself awake.. Usually by punching, kicking or jerking my whole body out of bed at once. Interesting enough, this only happens when I'm sleeping on my back.

It's fairly common. Scary, but common.

This happens to me all the time. Sometime I'll wake up in the middle of the night and can't move and really scared. Try shaking you body around, you'll have to muster up some energy, but it'll break you out of the paralysis.

This happens to me too. Strangely, it's always after my boyfriend leaves for work in the morning. I think it's sleep paralysis or something of the sort. I'll have dreams that someone is in the room with me and I hear the floorboards creaking. Sometimes I think he's come back home, but even then I can't make myself wake up to check. It feels like if I just try a liiiiittle harder I'll be able to wake up and move, but I can never do it. I just lay there, half awake, half dreaming, and helpless. It's very frustrating and pretty scary at times because I feel like I can't defend myself.

I have no advice to offer because I'm not sure how to stop or prevent it myself, or even if that's possible. Just wanted you to know that you're not alone ;)
