To shy to speak at work

Im 18 and moved from a small town so I've never had a job before, So when I got a callback at this clothing store I was super excited. The first day I was really happy and got all dressed up for work, however once I got there I felt super awkward and shy. When the costumers came in I couldn't even say hi! I tried, but my voice was so quiet no one would hear me and I felt so uncomfortable. I felt like I was in everyones way and couldn't wait to get out of there. The employer said she would phone me to give me my hours. Although I knew I didn't do so well. I later received an email from her saying that it didn't work out and i'm super cute but they don't want me to come in again. Reading the email made me feel really embarrassed and ashamed of myself. I now feel like I don't have the confidence to go out and get another job.. especially in retail :( Is there something wrong me me that I'm unable to say hi to customers? I really want to be outgoing, I'm so sick of being shy. ANY advice will be much appreciated :) Thanks for listening.

I remember when I was 18 and got a part-time job selling time-share packages. I nearly peed in my pants each time I had to give the little speech they had me memorize. I had that job for 3 months and I only managed to sell one package lol, and I still feel bad about it cause that old couple really didn't need that package at all...especially not the 5000 dollar platinum package.

Don't worry though, the uneasiness goes away. Sales is the hardest job of them all in the beginning, but the easiest after some time. Trust me, I've worked in quite a few areas.

You sound like me! I've been at a job 3 yrs, in retail, and I'm still very shy and hardly speak. People think I'm rude or mean, but I'm not like that at all. I think you should put your shyness aside and just be more outgoing and pretty soon it will be more natural.

I can relate too. Never wanted to do retail because of all the customers. Well, 6 years later I'm still at it. My shyness is a bit evident but I like helping people. For the first month it's scary but if you have really cool coworkers, you'll survive.

I was in your EXACT same position for my first job with being shy in retail and all that. You shouldn't be afraid to speak up. 99.9% of all customers that come in you'll neve see again so you shouldn't worry about how you sound in front of them. Just take a deep breath and say hi! I never thought I would be this outgoing in my entire life; Having a retail job has changed me as a person. You should look for another opportunity.

I was 18 when I got my first job, and I was really shy too, so I can relate to your story. I was messing up a lot and I found it hard to talk to customers too. Lucky my boss gave me the chance to get used to it and eventually I got more comfortable and now I am totally fine. Don't give up on looking for a job, you'll be fine.

It's hard when you first get a job to be confident in yourself. Ik how you feel.. You just have to understand that you walk into a clothing store and you hear someone say hi... It's no buggy when you see them do it so just put yourself in their shoes..
