To need to be the next great scientific mind

Kind of a weird question I know. But for some reason, I feel almost obligated to become the greatest scientific mind. To change the world for the better. To discover something on a universal level.. I feel as if I'm worthless if I don't do precisely that. I don't know what this says about me. Maybe I'm just a naive egomaniac, but for some reason I feel as if I need to do that or else I'm just a worthless waste of life.

The pursuit of high ideals is something sorely lacking in modern society. Do it.

I know what you mean. I have similar views. In a hundred years from now everyone living will be gone. Everything you stand for, possessions you have, etc. will mean nothing. The only thing that will matter is what you did to change the world and created for future generations while you were here. If you don't do anything to change the world, then your life is pointless.

well said. People are so involved with their self importance and egotistic lives that they fail to see that everything they are doing is trivial and temporary. Everything gets anachronistic and obsolete over time. Generally most people live for themselves, as they have in the past and will probably continue to do so in the future. The only people we remember from history are those who altered the course of human civilization.

Rogers has weapons. I got a vision. Now all we need is a mind.... Give me a call.

The finest minds in our world are devoted to stock market trading, and the development of weapons. If you are intelligent enough to become a science prodigy, it is highly unlikely that you would pursue this goal.

"This goal" being what? To be the next greatest mind, or stock and weapons?

The goal being to discover something on a universal level. Neither the stock market nor the defense industry would help you with this. Unless, you hit something highly unlikely by accident like 3K background radiation.

Why would I be in the stock market or weapons department. I would much prefer to be a man of science than a man of war or business.

You could get five times the pay in industry. Doing post-doctoral work at a university is usually lame. Only the politically privileged get grants for the cutting edge work.

Invent a device to neutralise gravity and / or invent a teleportation machine and you will become a trillionaire and be remembered as the scientist of the millennium.
