To feel intimidated by british people

Im American and I know how hated we are so I notice when I am around British people (mostly English) I get very nervous not to fit the stereotypes of being rude or stupid. I don't think I am either (im not fat or lazy either) but maybe just by American standards so I feel very shy around British ppl especially, because i think they are typically the most judgmental - iin?

  • No offense to the British, but I have seen plenty of fat, lazy, stupid British people. People can be all of those things no matter where they are from.

Yeah, I know. I am American and I am skinny and all my British cousins are fat, but that doesn't stop them from yammering on about fat Americans.

It is truly true. I swear. They live in Essex. They're real...and heavy.

You're not hated. Your country sometimes pursues policies which don't make you popular, but that's just government. I've met plenty of Americans and have dated a few. Nice, generous people with good senses of humour. Although I think we do judge your queueing etiquette. :P

To turn it around, when my sister's American fiance lived with me for a bit, I sometimes felt he was judging me harshly. He never said anything but there was a look in his eye about certain things we have different attitudes to here (religion and drinking, for two). Of all the people I know, I'd struggle to find five who believe in God. I just had a try and got up to two (my mother and a colleague at work). It can feel a bit intimidating when somebody gives you the "you're a drunken post-Imperial savage who is going to hell, and we won't miss you" look.

I didn't know that americans were stereotyped as being rude and stupid. I think that this is Homer Sympson's fault:)

LOL dear lord, just be yourself and you will be fine.

Oh and about the judgmental behaviour... that is just as much as a stereo type as the one you mentioned about Americans.

For every fat lazy American there is a pale arrogant foppish limey eating bad food with bad teeth.

I work in an industry riddled with limeys and after having regulated all their industry out of business they all became inspectors and "experts" and come over here to try to impose all their ridiculous bullshit.

I always relish having some limey spout off about this and that with an authoratative sounding accent, only to prove themselves complete fuckups when it comes time to actually do something.

Not that I hate. I've been to England and had a great time. I just can't stand parsimonious jackass "experts" (they're all experts, seems like) that haven't worked a day in their life telling me how to do things in that accent.

The thumbs down are flying in from across the pond!!!

Let me add that the Beatles are the most overrated band in history.

      Bring on the hate!!!

The insult that I take personally is that Americans have cheap taste and no class.

I take it personally because it is true for me. I have little regard for fashion of the aesthetic quality for the household products that I have. Mainly because I live off of a fairly low income but secondarily because I just don't care. I am not very materialistic and it is a leap for me to actually give a damn about whether or not my sheets match or my shirt is out of style. I don't dress like trash but at the same time I don't discriminate much when it comes to foods or decor. I don't believe, however, that this makes me a lesser person.

I do not fit the other stereotypes, though. I am not fat, lazy or, in my opinion, stupid. I would not say I am well educated (I am currently getting an education), but I don't believe that it affects my conduct. I don't like the reputation Americans have and I hear about it whenever I turn on the TV and watch British programs. Fat, stupid, lazy, over-patriotic rednecks. Ah well =/

My direct supervisor is British and a work colleague...I think because of that fact they've recently become BFFs where before they weren't really exposed to one another and therefore cared little of each other. That being said I find the both of them lazy, rude, egotistical and arrogant...but mainly my boss who is only a sergeant and no-one likes him anyway, and this work colleague is nothing but a paper pusher...I digress. I don't mind people of any race/culture or nationality, but I do mind people who think their position in your life means more to you than your own. I also don't find their jokes funny.
