There's pressure points in your ear... Maybe there's one that helps sleep.
There's a spot on my right temple that I rub with my fingertips. It sends a strong sensation through my whole body, though I can't quite describe it. Very soothing effect - I only use it when I really need to, for fear I'll "wear it out", in a sense. It's just my right temple, though. No idea why it wouldn't be the same for the other temple.
I think that's perfectly normal. I'm pretty sure it's actually an old Chinese remedy for stress releif. Anyway there's a lot of pressure points in the ears that if you hold down on them long enough (maybe about a minute) it tends to be calming, along with the repedetive motion. Or does that just work on dogs? lol jk ;]
A lot of people have a little ritual that they do before falling asleep, some may not even be aware they do it.
Not everyone touches their ear though, but they probably do something else that comforts them. I like to grind my teeth back and forth a few times before I nod off.
