To be too aware that you are talking

Sometimes when I'm talking I become very aware that I'm being listened to and get like an out of body experience, disconnected from what I'm saying. Then I'm listening to myself but all I'm thinking is how stupid I sound. Then I can't remember my train of thought, get embarrassed and flushed and end my thought abruptly. I'm very shy naturally. Seriously, is this normal?

Yea I do this too. It doesn't always result in me loosing my train of thought or insulting myself though...sometimes I even enjoy that out-of-body experience. Also happens to me when I realize I've been talking to myself out-loud for awhile, but I'll keep going sometimes just to 'witness' myself.

  • Sounds like depersonalization. Very likely to be an anxiety thing, I get it a lot too.

Yes, I get this feeling as well! You explained it so well. My heart will start racing as well and I feel like I'm not really there. When I'm talking to just one or two people, it feels like I'm on stage in front of hundreds of people giving a speech. It's so weird!

Sometimes, when I'm really tired but don't want to go to sleep, I will sit in a chair, or lie in bed and talk to myself....until I go to sleep.

Sounds pretty normal and like it might happen to a lot of people but it's not really talked about.

Happens to me a lot, too; just try to focus on your words; other people are in the same boat so you're not the only one. Just keep focusing on what you're trying to say :)

OMG this is something that has started to happen to me recently!! You described it very accurately, I always blamed it on my poor memory that I'm losing my train of thought but really I'm too aware of the other people around me listening in and focusing on me and I become afraid to say something wrong or make a mistake. I used to have braces and blamed my slurring on that but now that I have them off, I still do it sometimes which means its something in my thoughts messing up my speech :[

Yeah I know what you mean, it happens to me now and again. It's almost like when you're on the phone and you can hear a slight echo of your voice. Or like listening back to a recording of your voice and being super aware of how you sound.
