To be tired of the is it normal old-timers complaining about polls/stories

Is it normal to be sick of listening to people who've been on this site for years complaining about the noobs and The Good Old Days?

The site was not created to cater solely to their needs.

The idea they can control the internet is laughable.

Is it normal to wish they'd grow up and comments on stuff that interests them and ignore stuff that doesn't?

I'm a great fan of "be the change you want to see".

Ignore what you don't like. If you want more interesting discussions then post your questions! If people don't respond, well they're not that interested.

It's not so, the old days with me. Just some of the old users are gone which I miss, but in light of that alot of really good new users have come on the IIN scene :)

That is one of the best and at the same time worst things about IIN. There will always be (some) interesting new users and an ever diminishing number of "old" users.

I agree too. There are some new users that I really like on this site and I hope they stick around.

I have a feeling I know who you are talking about. Who knows maybe people in the 'Old Days' were great commenters, but from what I've seen when comparing years old posts to new ones, there's no real difference.

    So yes, it is normal.

    • Exactly - I can't see I've seen any particularly amazing polls being created - where are those old-timers with their great ideas, one wonders?

Just had a look at the Most Popular of All Time polls/stories - that seems to be what people want.

  • I used to be here under a different name so I've been about at least 2 years and it has changed in that time. Personally, I get sick of seeing stories about incest, sex with animals or the same old troll stories again and again.

As said, it's not about controlling the net, it's just about remembering when IIN had interesting and more thought provoking stories.

          • Really? :O Darn it, I'm not so good at being a net ninja lol jk :3 I actually had to make a new account since it wouldn't let me log back in as BRV XD

On side note, still miss Dappled, his posts made me think and laugh (not at him, at his humour) all at once. :)

            Comment Hidden ( show )
    • Couldn't one of you old-timers actually post an interesting and thought-provoking story?

      Comment Hidden ( show )
        -
      • Maybe I don't want to? Perhaps I prefer to listen and read rather than tell? And what if I don't have anything in my past I want to share or that is particularly interesting?

Both our points of view are valid but trust me, you'll get sick eventually of the same old crap over and over.

        Comment Hidden ( show )

        • I am guessing that those who post the same crap over and over don't want to think of thought-provoking and interesting stories to entertain you with either ;)

I'm not saying I won't get bored too one day. That may well happen - but I hope I don't keep popping onto those same threads I profess to hate to offer nothing but a complaint that it's not entertaining enough for me.

Not saying you do any of this, you understand, just an observation from stuff I've seen here.

I couldn't even tell you the name of anyone who's complained - I have really looked at it in that much depth.

I'm new to this and one thing that I find one might complain about are rhetorical posts like this where the post creator already knows the answer to his/ her damn question.

I mean a lot these posts are hard to take seriously. Which is a great example of how trolls are born.

Back in the good ol' days nobody had to put up with these damn younguns and their rebellious polls. Ain't no proper respect for their elders.

On a more serious note, whining about people whining... seems exceedingly silly to me.

    Comment Hidden ( show )

    • Not whining. Whining would be going on about it in every story and poll instead of actually commenting on the story/poll. I see it all the time. I've never complained about someone else's poll/story - that's their affair.

This thread is the only place I've ever brought this up.

Yeah but... you make a poll... complaining about people who make polls complaining.

I mean, scale of offense aside, don't you see the irony here?

        Comment Hidden ( show )
          -
        • Yeah, yeah, I get it - big irony if I comment on it, yeah.

The subtle difference you may not be getting though is I am only commenting here on a dedicated thread which none of you needed to respond to (the title was pretty clear).

That's not the same as derailing other threads complaining you don't like the subject matter.

True. I didn't mean to... well, derail your thread by pointing out irony, which could very well be seen as a form of complaining xD

I'm not even an old timer. I just found the notion a little silly to me, personally. I don't think you need to share that opinion, or that you don't have a valid point.

            • You're not derailing this thread - we are discussing the same topic from different angles :)

I am not denying complaining about this. In fact that's what I did in my title and description.

You can have the same attitude. You can ignore them, since this site doesn't cater to your needs, either. There's no point in moaning about it, and in doing so, you're being just as bad as they are.

As a member going on 5 and a half years, I do have somewhat of a beef with how the site is run, and yes, some of the users.

HOWEVER, I really am mostly content with the site. Yes, we all tend to look back and reflect about how awesome it was, but it shouldn't be that much of a big deal. I don't see it that much on this site, so I don't really see why you have that much of a problem with 'old timers' recollecting, lol.

Would also be interesting to see if the creator of this post will reveal him/her self ;)

I agree. There's no point moaning it. Do something about it. And if you don't want to do something about it, or feel that you can't, do what others have done and take your business to places that are like this site used to be.

I haven't been here a long time, but I've noticed a lot of these stories are practically the same, it's honestly becoming a bit of a bore posting here. Maybe some think it was different, but in reality they think that way because they've been seeing the same content over and over, and like to think of the past when everything was newer to them. That's my speculation anyway.

IIN used to be better. Still, no point complaining about it; new users have a right to do what they want here whether old-timers like it or not. I used to feel like you do, OP, but then IIN got worse even since I joined not so long ago, and I understood what they meant.
