Time loss at nite

Sometimes when I go to bed at night I will lay there for hours and get lost in my thoughts...and it can be 12:00 am and next time i look at the clock its 4:00am...and i know i havent slept..i find myself coming out of what feels like a coma?? Is this normal?

    I think about the what if,and how come, or anything crazy you can imagine! By the time I get curious about the time, I have to wake up.

    I do this as well, i imagine things in the hope of having an awesome dream but then i always get carried away and conciously continue my thoughts and stay awake for hours

    I think what you experience is that you are not falling into deep REM sleep. Might be several reasons: first cut out all caffeine after about 4 pm (coffee, cola, chocolate). If you are still lying awake and not deeply sleeping, you might be experiencing anxiety about something....or worrying about something. Or...you just might have insomnia. Talk to your doctor. There are many new sleep medicines that don't make you drowsy and aren't habit forming.
