Thoughts on jealously guarded secrets?

Assume the secret is advice/a technique/a strategy or otherwise useful information.

I'm fine with it - people have a right to guard their secrets 13
People have a right to guard their secrets, but I disapprove of it 3
I'm fine with it, but people don't have a "right" to monopolise it 1
I don't like it and I don't think people have a "right" to do that 1

    I assume you are thinking, 'tricks of the trade' type secrets?
    Of course it's a good thing to keep these things to yourself if you want to be valuable in a business environment. If you have come up with a faster, better way to do your job, why would you want to show everybody and lose your edge?
    If it took me 4 or 40 years to learn it, why would I give it away for free? On the other hand, if someone wanted to purchase it, for a fair amount, well then it's certainly on the market.
