I live in South Africa. When people think of South Africa they think of Apartheid, black people and Nelson Mandela.
South Africans are passionate on their rugby. We use to be the best. Now, post 2000, we have this thing called "the quota system" in all our sports. Basically what this is is the forcing of sport teams to consist of at least 40% black people in the team.
As a result of this shit our rugby turned shit because now great players get sacked so that black players can get their place. I don't care if you are black and great because then you deserve to be in the team but now you get a black mediocre player in the team in the place of a white outstanding player.
Our minister of sport (who has never played sport in his life) banned the rugby team from bidding to host the 2023 world cup because there are not enough blacks in the team.

    Given what white people ripped out of the country for centuries and their horrific exploitation of the original population, rugby isn't that important in my opinion: any steps to create a more equal society are far more important

    Maybe change has to happen from the ground up instead of artificially redressing the balance, like having quotas. Suddenly putting a bunch of people in positions based on skin colour, not competency or merit is not likely to result in any sort of success.
    It's complicated, I'm not an expert, that's just my opinion.

      This is exactly what happened. It's called Black Economic Empowerment (BEE). Qualified, highly sought after people in top positions were fired from their job and a black person was put in his place with no qualifications.
      Now there is something called Broad Based Black Economic Empowerment (BBBEE) where black people are given lots of money to start their own businesses where only black people are allowed to work. Now they get money and the majority of them buy fancy cars and buy expensive things.

      20 years ago the Rand to Dollar exchange rate was R3.42 for $1.00
      10 years ago the Rand to Dollar exchange rate was R8.20 for $1.00
      Today it is R14.94 for $1.00
