Think you know your zombies?

Alright,
So you love your zombie flicks, games, posters and mild necrophilia (entirely optional o_O).

But the big question remains:

Was the classic 70-80's era better than the new era(late 90-00's)?

Yeah, the classics had style -some had pretty good ideas, some had wicked acting... and some were just cult b-films.
Stuff like "Night of the Creeps", "Return of the living dead", classic Romero's opus.

But then, even though some of the new films were remakes, judge them on their own merits -diffirent types of the undead, viruses, conspiracies, wicked visual FX, better sound and ..actually... zombie comedies tv series!
The list for the new school is pretty decent already, but have "Rec", Romero's remakes -"Day/Dawn/Land of the Dead", "Resident Evil", "Zombieland", "Shaun of the dead".

And sooo...

New. The old ones are just laughable, really.

When I saw the old Dawn of the Dead with the zombies walking around the mall, all I could think was that it looked like a normal day at the mall when all the old fucks are there walking around.

The old zombies are so slow and retarded, I like the new fast clever ones.

They are cult and there are people that will defend those old films till the dead will rise. But I totally agree with you.

I also noticed I enjoy the zombie genre more when the reanimation started to be more about contamination/infection and less about some occult "beyond the grave" shit.

  • Half and half. I prefer zombies to be slow, dumb, but can rush up a little, still not as fast as a living being. It just brings that whole fear part in to it, knowing that they will never stop, you will run out of energy, and even if you run out of their way for a few seconds, you take breaks, they don't.

For example, the zombies out of The Walking Dead. Those are my perfect idea of zombies.

      ☆ <--- You get a star.

Realism. That's what old school is. No way can zombies be fast moving, etc; that takes all of the fear away because it's so far-fetched. Zombies are scary because of the genuine threat they hold- a film should bring that out.
      Yup, classic = better.

I was was refering to film genre, in general...

But let's talk about the zombies themselves.
I like the fast and vicious mutations more, although it's a deviation to the original idea of a walking, decomposing corpse. Because -sure, they'll never stop. But you can easily outrun them, take higher ground. Or just bash their brains with a baseball bat, cause they're too slow to block or dodge. They are a menace in numbers, but I find them less frightening.

      • I think that is what is supposed to be the main thing about zombies, not an individual zombie, the amount there would be, if you get what I mean.
I can see how people would like the fast ones, though.

Yup.. I got into the fast mutants through videogames. Left4Dead series have a lot of "shufflers", but they're like.. fillers. You never take them as a main threat, sometimes I'm too lazy even to shoot them.

But the bigger, meaner, scarier creatures... always lurking somewhere, always make your heart skip a beat whenever they attack. Such a thrill!

I guess I just begun to appreciate the same in the movies.

Although -if it's the zombie apocalypse for real, I'd rather have the classic walkers..hahah.

  • I loved return of the living dead and those movies. I actually like most zombie movies. However I will note the lack of explanation as most of them just start and no one including the Audience knows why the zombies came to be.

Most of them are listed under "Horror or Sci-Fi" and the first movies to give a full on explanation I think was "Resident evil" which was based on a game.

I also will note the movie (Zombie land) that did something no one has ever done. They made a Zombie "Action movie".

Now this was a brilliant idea because if you think about it most action films can be edgy but not so serious and are somewhat corny but sometimes have a bit of humor to them.(Good example:The A Team)

They even made a Zombie anime which is called "HOTD(High school of the Dead)which I honestly thought was going to be crap but I must admit they did very good in collaborating the two.(This show has a lot of fan service and is rated pg18 for anyone interested in it but is a good show).

I also will put the "Horror-comedy" selection which is "Shawn of the dead" a more recent made movie. I think we can all say that zombie movies are timeless and you can always use them no matter what time period you are in. Just like heroes when going down in popularity will always exist.

Not a fan of Action-packed G.I.Joe Zombie. I prefer -real- scary, not I'll-just-picture-you-naked scary. Genuine theory and thought behind a film are important.

Do I know my zombies? Oh hun you are speaking to an expert.

Now-a-days zombies are very different they're technically not zombies they are infected. Pay attention to modern movies and games. There's a zombie virus that infects one LIVING person and that person affects others and everyone is craving human flesh and it's an apocalypse.

Old school zombies are the hands popping out of cemeteries. These are the guys with the rotting flesh and maggots. They are normally summoned by something unexplainable. They are the undead. If they bite you that doesn't always mean you'll turn into zombie but they will eat your flesh. Old timey zombies aren't about zombie-filled apocalypse. They're smaller in scale and normally have something unholy about them like a ghost story.

Which ones "better" you say. Well the infected can certainly kill more people if that's what you mean. But if you're talking about stories i normally enjoy the undead more. But they're both great

      Ah, a true Connoisseur :)

And you are absolutely right... I used the "undead" for the new school, and that might be a little off.
Even though, in most of the movies they technically die before turning, the point is -it's a virus, not a supernatural occurence/occultism.

And, since the idea of a viral plague/apocalypse, end of the civilization and survival of the fittest seems oddly and disturbingly charming to me (I promise I don't live in a bunker!) -I tend to prefer to the newer stuff.

But they are both great, and sometimes watching a bunch of black & white shamblers really makes my evening :)

In a video game, the slow shuffling zombies should not be understated. Especially since they're not as fragile as the new generation.

Just imagine, you're roaming through an old warehouse, looking for supplies. You've noticed a couple of shamblers, but decided to ignore them to save valuable ammunition. You dig up some supplies. Some food, some planks to build your awesome post-apocalyptic skull-fortress...

When you've got what you need and head on back, you notice that the shamblers have boxed you in. No way to get to the exit. Even though you're in denial at first, as the zombies draw closer, you start to realize that this is the end.

I think the zombies that give you a slow and scary death are way more terrifying than the fast ones. They just jump in your face and shout "oogity boogity boo". That's a cheap horror trick, in my opinion.

I must say I very much enjoy them both.
I really think it's too bad we don't have better zombie movies in our day and age. The only one I really liked was 28 days later.
But we're progressing toward a better zombie-filled future!

I hate "Zombieland". "Dawn of the Dead" was awsome. "Resident Evil" the most awsome. "Night of the Living Dead" was also awsome (better than "Dawn of the Dead" not as good as "Resident Evil")

Really? You hated "Zombieland"? I thought it was hilarious :)

I guess a matter of opinion.

Resident Evil was awesome for the first 2 movies (well, extinction was kinda alright). I tried really hard to give a fair chance to the newer Res.Evils, but they're terrible.

I prefer old kind of zombies who are slow a retarded, those who became undead not some creatures made by "accident" chemicals or something. However zombies who are fast and can do more than brainless walking are scrier. In the end I don't care how old is the movie as long as it has zombies~
