They won't take "mmm-hmm" for an answer, iin?

I've noticed that when I talk to people, that they won't accept me replying to them with "mmm-hmm". They act like they can't hear me and demand that I speak up (and speak english). I don't do it to be rude. I'm very awkward and uncomfortable when talking to people. Most of the time, I don't know how to reply to the things that they say. I know that there are people who are able to pull off saying "mmm-hmm". Yet, for some reason, I can't. Is this normal?

It takes skill to pull off talking to people without opening your mouth.

I consider myself a fucking expert at the "I love you & your opinion is spot on" mmm-hmm, the disapproving & dismissive "fuck off already" mmm-hmm & everything in between.

  • I hate when people don't reply with words and I will explain why.
If I ask somebody something and they reply with a verbal grunt or non-verbal communication, I feel ignored and it is annoying they cannot give a straight answer.
It also bothers me when someone answers a question unclearly, without really answering.
It's like they are avoiding the question and they may as well have walked away.
An example would be if I ask, where do you want to go eat, and someone answers, my stomach hurts. This is a great example of avoiding the topic. I didn't ask if your fucking stomach hurts, i asked where you want to eat. Now maybe they were implying they did not want to go eat anywhere, but they did not say that. It is rude to imply something without being clear about it. The correct answer would have been "i do not want to go eat."
Grunts and non-verbal gestures are even worse because they do not clearly answer the question and people have every right to be angry about being ignored.

    • This happens to me even when the other person hasn't asked me a question.

      • What are you answering then? You said they wont take it for an answer.

        • Sometimes, I do it because, again, I don't know what to say. I'll say it to get them to know that I am listening and following what they are saying. It's like they want constant validation.

    • That's a possibility. There have been many times when people have told me to speak up or acted like they couldn't understand what I was saying.
