There, their they're, your and you're

THEY'RE- They are!
THEIR- They own it!
THERE- A place!!!

YOUR- You own it!
YOU'RE- You are!

Am I the only one that really hates when people confuse and misuse these simple words?! THEIR meanings are right in them!!! What is YOUR opinion on this subject? Do you even care?

People need to be educated. Honestly, I am a grammar Nazi.

I am like a grammar Nazi when it comes to this. 52
I hate when people do it! I try to correct them as nicely as possible. 39
I do it all the time. 10
I know quite a few people who do this, but I don't mind.. 44
Wait.... whats the difference? 5
Help us keep this site organized and clean. Thanks!

I think my favorite one was "musturbrate"

It was in the headline question, then ALSO spelled the same way in the actual question, like two more times! Musturbrate... *smh*

Does this mean it's against the rules to post a funny story about spelling? It got some thumbs up. I think people liked it.

You said my favourite 'one'. 'One' presumably meaning 'example of incorrect grammar'. Just thought you and other people might want to know that spelling isn't part of grammar.

There's no need to be protective over your story or your thumbs up. Be happy :)

I just meant my favorite example of silly things in the same general category as the OP's story. My last comment even specifically says "about *spelling*". I'm a teensy bit offended by the insinuation that I'm unaware of the difference between spelling and grammar.

Granted, this has more to do with my own pride than it does your assumption. I just had to get a little huffy. *preens ruffled feathers with feigned indifference*

Orthography isn't part of grammar. When someone confuses "they're" with "their" it is because they have confused the spelling of one and the other - not the grammar which is the set of rules which govern the language.

Ohhhhhh I cannot STAND when people misuse "their", "they're", and "there". It hurts me on the inside, for real. How can people be that stupid? Especially if they're old enough to have passed the 6th grade. It just goes to show you how stupid today's young generation is as an average. Another thing that bugs the living bejeebers out of me is the misuse of "you're" and "your". I think that disturbs me than the "their", "they're", and "there" misuse, actually.

For you youngsters out there, here's a little tip to help you appear more educated in the real world, as well as the internet world:

"Your" is to describe something of which you possess. "You lost your minds." Or "Your cat ran away."

"You're" is a contraction, to simplify the words "You are". Examples would be "You're happy." Or "You're in the kitchen making lunch."

I personally will ignore spelling issues such as those, UNLESS the person in question is calling someone else "stupid."

It ruins the whole "I'm smarter than you are" theme if you can't spell your insult properly.

Doesn't bother me much. I know some very intelligent people that can't spell or articulate in a written manner worth anything. They try, but spell-check and proofreads are a must for them ^^; For people I don't know, I just hope that they are good at something else and not trying to form a career based off of written communication.

It's near incoherent typing that I cannot stand. I have met people who type/write so poorly that I have to sit there much longer than I normally would to try to piece together exactly what message they are trying to convey. Usually their oral communication parallels. Go figure.

Typos are generally accepted but if someone doesn't know would've is a contraction for would have and writes 'would OF' then they just seem stupid.

    WTF does would OF mean?

It only annoys me when it happens constantly, such as when someone types a story that is so grammatically incorrect and spelled so horribly that I'd like to punch them. Otherwise, we all make simple rushed mistakes, though I do re-read and try to edit my comments before the 15 minutes are up.

it really annoys me when people get this agitated with all of this. ok, grammar in school/work is important.. i get that. however, with technology e.g. text, twitter etc.. it doesn't have to be perfect.. it's short hand. & if people can understand what you mean... does it really matter?!?!!!

I'm a linguistics major, speak two languages, read English literature frequently, and typically try to have my grammar at least be acceptable. I'm exactly the type of person you would expect to be a grammar Nazi. However, I honestly couldn't care less if somebody does this. As long as I know what they mean, I don't give one shit if they use the wrong one. I don't understand how anyone can care this much about a common, petty, and understandable mistake.

Of course you don't care about it. Nobody expects a linguist to be a grammar nazi - that's the whole point about being a linguist - there is no right or wrong, just comunication or no communication. If you were a grammatician then you would be a grammar nazi.

I am a frequent offender of improper use of the words your/you're. Really out of pure laziness and its extremely irritating when I get a reply and it's just some jack ass correcting my grammar. As long as what was said is legible enough to get their point across and doesn't look like a 14 year old girl texting it shouldn't be a problem. Internet is just a stream of consciences to me I say shit and move on, no spell check or filter. I have not once felt the need to correct random peoples grammar.

While you are here, can you tell me where you put the apostrophe in the possessive case for people whose surname ends in Z? Is it the same as names ending with S? Or not?

Never had a good answer to this one.

    Comment Hidden ( show )
      -
    • roxielilyrox

you have to cary on putting apostrophe. even though it sounds like an 's' it doesn't. so e.g. 'Chavez's bike' is correct :)

      Comment Hidden ( show )
    • Megid

      Mr. Chavez' bike.
      Mr. Chavez's bike.

They both look fine to me. *shrug*

I think you could use Chavezes if you were referring to them as a family and not as an individual of that family in possessive form.

      Comment Hidden ( show )
        -
      • Frosties

That was pretty much my thinking because the Z is kind of a half-S. I actually went away and did some research for once and what I found was that words ending with s, z, x, or ce generally use the same possessive case (just an apostrophe) but where there's a primary or secondary stress (i.e. substance), you may choose to add 's. Then there are a lot of special cases.

I've noticed many Spanish writers structure their sentences differently and it wouldn't be odd to say "The bicycle of Hugo Chávez".

The James family house is always one example I use. The Jameses' house looks odd compared to The James' house.

The reason for the Spanish writers using different structures to what we use is because their first language in this case Spanish influences their command of English, ie they use English words in Spanish word order. I speak Portuguese and even after ten years speaking it every day I still make some word order mistakes!

I know what you mean. I went out with a Brazilian girl for about six months and also had a Portuguese friend. Even with that level of exposure to the language, I still couldn't work it out. It's like when to use the ro- and po- prefix in Russians. A Russian once told me there's no rule; you just have to be Russian to know.

I can imagine just what you are saying - the portuguese grammar book is about five inches thick with the thinnest paper you have ever seen and all in fine print. Nobody but the highest level academics can understand it. Even the natives can't speak it correctly! English is far easier by comparision.
