There should be a law for cheating?

Seeing the relationships nowadays and then later on people regretting for what they have done or what they have gone through. I think there should be a law and punishment for those people. As then i think people will think twice before getting into it. And there will be some respect for partners and relationships. What do you think?

No, I don't think so 55

Unless you are legally married, it would unenforcable. It would require unmarried couples to legally register their relationships with the government, and I think most people would be against doing that.

Also, in most cases there would be no proof. Unless you has photos of them having sex (which would probably be illegal for you to have without their permission), you couldn't prove a thing.

As terrible as cheating is, a law against it would be impossible to enforce, not to mention a huge waste of tax-payers money (I don't think many people want the police to sort out someone else's petty relationship issues).

". It would require unmarried couples to legally register their relationships with the government,"

Which is the exact definition of a marriage license ... ;)

and i totally agree. it's a waste of tax-payer money.

Sure sure someone gets their heart broken but... that's part of life. The government has no right to punish the other person just because a heart is broken or feelings hurt.

i mean seriously... someone would want to set up a government that takes action just because someone had their feelings hurt?

i can see that one working against the first amendment cos someone would then try to decide we can't speak our minds because someone might get their feelings hurt.

and then you end up with a government dictating your personal life. it's bad enough they're trying to do that already. don't encourage them!

agree with what you said. I do believe there should be a law, but as stated by dom180, there would be too many implications and wouldnt be very applicable.

  • -Recently on Jail time-

Prisoner: What are you guys in here for?

Bank robber: I got caught during a heist.

Gang member: I shot down someone.

Serial killer: I killed 4 people.

Cheater: I cheater on my wife...

Somehow I see being punished by the law for cheating to be too stupid of a thing to do. Yes, cheating is bad, it isn't bad enough to be considered a broken law, Like Dom180 said.

I had a horrible relationship and this girl cheated on me. It took me 3 years to recover fully. It should be a punishable crime, though it wouldn't be very practical. Maybe with advances in technology

Yes there should be. Because when someone threatens you, there is a law for it and you can ask compensation for the emotional damage it caused. What's so different about love, in both cases you get hurt in the head. And not physically. Would enforcing it be hard? Yes. But still, logically it's quite alright.

The problem with that in my mind is that

    1) the government shouldn't be interfering with our day to day lives.

    2) some relationships do not last long enough that the couple could report it before someone cheated. reference: normal teenagers

They DESERVE lawful punishment, but as others have said, it would be very difficult to enforce. Theoretically if we could enforce it without it costing a bunch of tax money, then my answer would be an obvious YES. But I think our government has enough on their hands without having to deal with everyone's relationship issues. All's fair in love and war.

Now in a small community of just a few thousand people, like a small town for example, I could see how a law like that would be very beneficial and not particularly costly. This is because it'd be easy to unearth the cheaters and serve justice and there would be a lot less relationships to worry about. But in our vast sea of millions and millions and millions of people here in the USA, Enforcing cheating laws would be complicated and confusing for our police forces and it'd be so much easier for them to slip under the radar.

These laws do exist, in some places. And during divorce, adultery is looked at as a 'crime' of sorts even if it's not necessarily against the law in that particular jurisdiction. The adulterer is usually 'punished' in the divorce.

The US military will punish members for adultery. Adultery isn't specifically listed in the UCMJ but it's a punishable offense.

No, I don't believe there needs to be such laws. Protections in divorce, yes. Calling the cops because your boyfriend is with another girl? no. The law should only protect married people, they have a legal binding contract with eachother. Even then, I don't think the police, courts and jails should be involved for a cheating incident. That's silly. We don't have the time or money for prosecuting this nonsense anyway, I'd rather keep violent people in jail over cheaters.

Actually it is in the UCMJ

You forgot "Article 134"... it's pretty much the "catch-all" for the military.

sadly wiki has an easier to find list than the military:

      http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Uniform_Code_of_Military_Justice

The general article (Article 134) authorizes the prosecution of offenses not specifically detailed by any other article: all disorders and neglects to the prejudice of good order and discipline in the armed forces, all conduct of a nature to bring discredit upon the armed forces, and crimes and offenses not capital, of which persons subject to this chapter may be guilty. Clause 1 of the article involves disorders and neglect "to the prejudice of good order and discipline in the armed forces." Clause 2 involves "conduct of a nature to bring discredit upon the armed forces." Clause 3 deals with non-capital offenses violating other federal law; under this clause, any such offense created by federal statute may be prosecuted under Article 134. United States v. Perkins, 47 C.M.R. 259 (Air Force Ct. of Military Review 1973).

But yes for civilians it's really bad judgement to expect the government to step in every time you get upset about something.

It's akin to calling 911 every time someone forgets to give you ketchup packets at the drive-through

Absolutely not! How ridiculous. Unenforceable. Society can hardly keep pace with putting murderers and child molesters through the justice system and the prisons are fit to bursting.

If it had any effect at all, people would probably be more inclined to stick with casual open-ended relationships only rather than risk going to prison because they fancied a bit on the side.

Law and order that's what laws are for.. If we lives in a 'state of nature' the stronger will defeat the weak. Then, it will be survival of the fittest. Thus, if there was no law, it would be fine for me to beat the shit out of you and everyone else can join in as there would be no law to prevent us from doing so.
      Think about it
